The TV shouldn't be fixed it should be replaced. All of them should have been recalled when they realised they were defective. Let us know what you decide to do. May I ask what model number your TV is?

In the end, it was still my father's decision and he chose to repair it (since he really wanted a 60" TV).

The model no. is 60R200A or something along those lines, the SXRD. I think the final cost of labour was 250ish, including delivery to and from our home, so it seems alright. Granted, I did want to get a replacement (maybe a 46" LCD with LED edge lighting), but as I said, my dad wanted a 60".

$250 is not that bad then I suppose, is there a warrenty on the repairs and the parts? I should think there would be. I have the same model but a 50" no probs yet but I have my fears.

I doubt there's a warranty. One good news is, at least from what I gathered from the technician, the optical block in the 70" are only cleaned, not replaced. While for the 60" you get a new one. I'm assuming for the 50" you'd get the same deal, so yeah, a new optical block should last around 10k hours.

Just out of curiosity a friend of mine has the 42" version of this set. Whice has developed a rainbow ban across the top. Is this the same issue or unrelated?..

Hey - glad I found this thread.

I purchased my 60R200A  60" SXRD in October 2006.

Replaced the bulb after 7310 hours in January 2010.

In the last few months it's progressively become a yikky green/yellow tint.

Do I ring Sony direct,  or talk to the local Sony agent I purchased it from?

I think you should ring up Sony, that's what I did. Make sure you have the model number (which I can see you have), the serial number (This can be found either on the back of your TV, or in the options etc in your phone - I think's the system info page). You also need your receipt.

OK,  I've contacted a local Sony repair agent and awaiting a reply.

Seems like it's a really big issue... check this out!!!

Quick update.  The Sony repair agents have collected my TV and it is indeed a problem with the 'optic block'.  Sony have 'kindly offered to replace this part free of charge'.  The cost of the optic block is $2700+gst!!!

I just need to pay around $400 for frieght and labour.

Not bad service! :)

I had a similar thing happen with a 50" 3LCD Grand Wega set. I was going to go the CGA but Luckily i had an extended warranty with Harvey Norman. The Sony Tech didnt even bother coming out to check the TV once i told him what the problem was. He basically said "Optical Block problem...expensive to fix...and when fixed not guaranteed to last". He submitted the resultant "cost" to Harvey Normans Extended Warranty who of couse balked at spending that much(didnt get an exact price)on repair and offered me a free 50" Panny X Series Plasma. I argued the 3LCD TV had a higher 720P native resolution so they offered me the U series entry level Full HD model for $200. I thought what the hell and took the offer. Im very pleased with the new TV. I have a few friends with the same 3LCD TV and am trying to get them to use the CGA to get it fixed/replaced. I mean the TV was advertised as having replacable Lamps so it could last pretty much forever. A bit pointless when the picture has an orange bar across the screen or green, yellow blue tinge across it. Sony should have recalled all of those models. I wont be buying a Sony TV again.

If you took them to the disputes tribunal i believe you could probably win 100% of costs.

But, it's a hassle . Labour only is pretty good balance.
