This whole scenario is a good example for the GST on imported goods debate. It clearly demonstrates that a New Zealand distributor for this product would struggle to make any money as straight away they have a 15% disadvantage in the form of GST.

blur: You've misunderstood what I'm saying. A company reselling the card in New Zealand would have to charge GST, thus making the sell price at least 15% more than someone importing and not paying any GST or VAT.
hads: I think some sort of incentive for people to buy locally is a good idea though.

Which as I mentioned is not what I was suggesting at all.

I disagreed about providing an incentive to buy locally, meaning an incentive to buy imported goods from a local seller rather than directly from overseas. On the other hand I have more sympathy for the idea of providing incentives to buy locally-produced goods.
