My PS3 WILL decode and export Dolby Digital, DTS and I think Dolby TrueHD as a decoded multichanel LPCM stream to the HT receiver. Sorry!
My older PS3 (the chubby one) will not decode DTS HD-MA, nor can it output the undecoded bitstream audio data for an external decoder (in my Integra HT Amp). I believe this has been fixed in the newer slim PS3 with its more advanced HDMI chip.
I also got confused with the MySky decoder. It is the one that will only send stereo via HDMI, and you access the Dolby Digital bitstream data via the coax or optical output and decode it with an external decoder.

Yes they can, the update came out about three years ago

Wrong as well on this point as well, MySky will send 5.1 over HDMI as well as optical - it was in a firmware upgrade quite a while ago now.
Settings Video Settings BD/DVD Audio Output Format (hdmi)
--> Set this to Linear PCM
* This means the PS3 will do the decoding of the audio, not the receiver.
Then go to: Settings Sound Setting Audio Output Settings
This is now a 3 page (or so) selection menu.
--> Select: hdmi Automatic or Manual to select compatible output formats The Final page will show you all the formats the PS3 will decode and send out to the receiver.
*If there is not a tick in the format being played on a DVD/CD/Bluray etc then no sound will be heard or the sound will be downgraded to something that does have a tick in it.
The idea is that you select all the boxes that are compatible with your receiver, so it only gets sent sound it can work with.
Finally on your Muteki, make sure that it says multichannel or PCM or something. This means it will play the audio coming to it from the PS3 WITHOUT STUFFING WITH IT when you play a Bluray.
General PS3/HD Audio notes:
* All PS3 CAN decode every HD audio format type * The older fat PS3 has to decode HD audio itself, it can not pass on (bitstream) the still encoded audio for a receiver to do the decoding. The newer slim PS3 can do this. * To get HD audio you MUST use hdmi.
Would have to look tonight, but the main difference (that i noticed from my couch) being the "speaker indicators" display change automatically depending on the source now - whereas before it was static.
ie: when switching playTV from tv2 to channel 3, it changes from "L, R and SW" to "L, R, SW, SL, SR etc"
Need to set up my ps3 media server to output more than just 2.1, it seems - but that shouldn't be too much hassle - it's more likely my streamed media wasn't compressed to actually have surround audio.
