lchiu7: Slightly OT but my Onkoy TX-SR576 HDMI board has failed completely also. And the cost for a new board is almost the same as a new AVR.

I take it the DIY repair of the capcitors didn't work then?

You need to make sure to use category two (high speed) cable for runs of fifteen metres.

Slightly off topic. I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver with the well documented HDMI handshake issue (audio and picture blink in and out for a few minutes after the receiver has warmed up, happens irrespective of input). I've seen that the fix could be as simple as replacing four capacitors but I'm not up to doing the repair myself. For the record the receiver was bought when I still lived in the UK back in 2008.
Can anyone recommend a repair company in the Wellington region?

When I had the problem (not fixed) with my 576 Onkyo NZ recommend a guy in Miramar. I forget his last name but he is Mike and his email is mike dot centrade at gmail dot com (trying to avoid spam harvesting).

He replaced the caps on my receiver but alas it didn't fix the problem but might fix yours.

As an aside it's not a hard job. On the 576 the HDMI board is a separate board and unplugs pretty easily. Then the existing caps can be removed readily (not even sure you need a solder sucker) and new ones inserted. There is room on the board for much larger one than the ones Onkyo provide.

I got spare caps from Jaycar but Mike had his own also.

Just tried what was supposed to be an installer grade 10m cable between my 608 and TV. It was worse than the original. So much so that two of the sources and the OSD setup menu wouldn't display. On rereading this thread I had a closer look at the box the cable came in. It states the cable is 28AWG and bearing in mind what 70mm (from RapalloAV) said about the cables needing to be 24AWG I am glad I arranged to be able to return it if it didn't perform.

FYI the cable supplied from Rapollo absolutely looked the business, and they are champions to deal with, although I didnt need it in the end as we swapped out the MYSKY box and changed all the smaller patch cables for Kordz Pro .5m cables, now everything seems peachy, hasnt dropped for 2 weeks... however going back 2morrow as the picture now apparently has a pink hue when watching sky. Maybe I should sell up and go sailing...

However now I have the same issue with a previous install where I ran quality Kordz cable (never had a problem ever) 15m from an Onkyo NR579 amp to a sony TV, no sources show up MYsky, Bluray and sky digital scaled via HDMI. Again, was working fine, now nothing.

If I was sherlock Holmes I would deduct its the amp, based on the install experience and the feedback via this forum.

Has happened on 3 different jobs now, all 15m, all onkyo/integra. In the future will try out the rapollo AV cables but looking twice now at the Onkyo brand. Never had an issue with Yamaha...

@vaav - Did you have any additional issues with the SR608?

Mine appears to be failing with HDMI. If I connect directly to the TV no issues, but via the Onkyo I get issues similar to the HDMI failure due to bad capacitors reported by many other Onkyo users.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
