Exactly what Cyril7 said! The cost of a STB that can receive HD (either MPEG2 or MPEG4 or H.264) can't be much more than one that cannot so why not select those to avoid having to perform a replacement programme later? Then TV1/TV2 can inject HD content into the stream they upload to the satellite now. Just think of the jump they would have over Sky by doing that and they get Govt funding to help out no less!

No need to upgrade studios, OB vans etc. at this time - just give us the HD content they already get from overseas.

It is significantly more but the real problem is that they aren't common, even in Europe.

You can buy a cheap DVB-T STB for under A$100 in Australia and in Europe you can pick them up for even less (I saw them retailing for 30 euros last year for a basic model)

Current realistic prices are $120-150 (based on several retailers in NZ) for a SD box, where as a HD box is still $500+ based on Aus prices. The price of SD boxs could easily come down 30-40bucks once importers have a decent market to sell to, that need only be in 1000up pricing. Getting a local CE(tick) electical safety mark is currently a big cost barrier, but once a decent market exists that will become of no concequence.
