What do you base that on?. I was told by a retailer, that sony have the lowest percentage of problems, and the consumer mag also gives them the edge on reliability. That particular model also has really good reviews.

Sony make some TV's that work well for specific environments... like brightly lit rooms where everyone is viewing straight onto the screen. Their 8 bit panel is getting a little old in the tooth now though, and its off-axis viewing angles are poor (sit to the side, it'll look washed out compared to other brands). But in a bright room, and if you don't plug in a home theatre system it'll out perform a glossy screen Samsung - which have next to nothing speaker wise (seriously, crank one up to 100... and see how bad the sound is).
But in a dark room and when integrated into a home theatre system - it's a good option to consider.

I do like the LG's though, they have great IPS panels, and have (like its been said above) gone from strength to strength recently. Personally, I'd buy an LG over a Samsung... but that's just me.

Don't LG and use philips panels? I like the look of the LGs, although I was not a fan of their products when they were called goldstar. But quality has probably improved a lot since then.

LG and Phillips have some joint productions, abit like Samsung and Sony had which is why I guess Sony were abit behind as they got the panels but not the developed tech to go with them, Samsung kept that for themselfs! If I'm not mistaken Sony now have a joint panel plant with Sharp.

I don't buy into the brightly lit room business, its either a good TV or not, A glossy photo always looks better than a matte one,Sure it refects but suck it up! the only reason I would buy a matte screen TV is if I only watched TV outside or used it as a computer monitor.But remember a matte screen will still have a white haze over it instead of reflecting in a bright room anyway.
And never buy a TV nowadays for how good the sound is they all suck. But if your spending this sort of coin on a monitor you will already have a nice stereo to plug it into.

Having lived in a house with white sheer curtains... I can say that I HATE TV's that struggle to deal with bright environments. The decor in my case was a non-debatable factor (other half liked it - so it stayed)... Yes, a poor matte screen will rob you of colour, but a good TV, with a decent filter will perform in all conditions. If you're gaming with a glossy screen and struggling to see detail in darkly lit sections, or you're using your TV to comb your hair in the mornings... well, it's too glossy.
I find anything that distracts me from what I'm watching to be detrimental to my enjoyment, hence reflections are the enemy.

I know of a few people who chose glossy screen Samsung's because they liked how the panel looked when it was TURNED OFF! Made me wonder a little bit...

Some TV's suit people / rooms better than others - it's up for everyone to make their own call on what'll work for them I suppose.

And I'm not so sure re: people buying home theatres to go with their TV's.
I believe people probably 'should'... but to be honest, TV's are so cheap now they're almost becoming commodity items. With the way prices are going, people will go out to buy a block of Mozzarella, and grab a 50" plasma on the way home... Panels are cheap - audio isn't exactly dropping in price.

LG Display was originally a joint venture between LG and Phillips, however Phillips sold off their share some time around 2008.

Regarding Cinema 3D and 1080p,
Active Shutter - 1080p through one eye (alternating image, can create noticeable flicker)
Cinema 3D - 1080p through two eyes (540+540 to each eye, from focal point/glasses can measure 1080 discrete lines of resolution) If you have a Cinema 3D in a typical living room setting, there should not be noticeable black lines, this is when you are at a strong vertical angle to the panel, or up close (like in a store shelf). For a regular lounge, you would most likely find the horizontal viewing angles are much improved and maintain a strong 3D effect (vs traditional).

The LX9500 holds one advantage, being that is is Fully LED Backlit for true local dimming.
