I can regulally make it lose the no overscan setting just by having the 1080p secondary monitor unplugged on bootup - plug it in and it will detect and have overscan most times.

Oh, I forgot the complete junk that CCC is, with its 100s of megs just to be able to change a few settings. Seriously? why is that turdware so big? And dont forget that if you change the driver it will make CCC start to crash till you waste forever and 2 reboots removing and installing the more current version which will do nothing other than move all the controls into totally different places where it will take you ages to find because the incomplete broken help files dont tell you where anything is.

Rich, sounds like you have been traumatized by your experience :-)

I would agree that CCC is not a great piece of software. It is .NET based I think, which is possibly not a great choice for a OS level config tool. Thankfully, I have now got it set up in a way that works and never have to touch it again. I refrain from upgrading drivers at this point because I know how "finely balanced" the HD-video/audio scene is... If I try an upgrade, i always image the OS drive first.

I'm not sure whether I would get an AMD or NVIDIA for my next desktop build. I had pencilled in a 6950, but perhaps something from the green team might be an interesting change. Prior to the HTPC era I was solely NVIDIA, primarily for their linux support. CCC's lack of merit wouldn't be a big factor though, it is all about pushing pixels for me (linux doesn't even matter these days!).

I too have avoided ati cards since having problems with one when first building my htpc a number of years ago. However now I am in the market for a new laptop that I also want to use as a Mediaportal client. But I want it to handle freeview HD via hdmi to an LCD tv. I have seen some i-core models with radeon 6770 graphics and an wondering how they cope specifically with Mediaportal playing freeviewhd. Otherwise I will play it safe and get one with an nvidia.

Friend is having massive issues with his new core i7 laptop with this new BS shared graphics thing when using a second screen on it. Drag photoshop from one screen to the other and BAM, it crashes, same for media player classic. It seems that it ends up with the laptop panel running on the intel GPU and the external on the nvidia chip. There is software that allows you to move things between GPUs but there is no option to tell the intel one to go take a hike and do nothing.

His previous i7 laptop with the prior generation where the intel graphics was not a player had none of the problems.

As usual dell are no help on software issues etc.

Interesting, Dell was one of the brands I was looking at. Probably the same for all sandybridge iCores though. I don't suppose he uses mediaportal? It's just I have been caught in the past by a computer that would happily play freeviewhd on windows mediacentre but stuttered on Mediaportal.
