OK. Got it installed. Used Putty, so much easier.

OK. So I think I have it pointing to the right music folder. I have a few of my albums in there. Hate the order of it. Why can't it come up with artists, then click on an artist then it comes up with their albums. At this stage everything is just arranged by song. Ewk

Okay - so the audio freezing within the 1st second of playback issue is a known problem.
Fix = changing audio type to 'DVDPlayer'.

How do you do this?
Well, once you highlight the right song, hold down the menu button until another on-screen menu pops up, then scroll down to "Play using...". Choose DVDPlayer and everything should work.

BUT - you have to do this every time you want to play music.

Also - if you need to reboot your ATV2, hold down the 'Menu' and 'Down' buttons on the remote until the light on the front of the box flashes rapidly. Then let them both go and the box will start up again.
This should allow you to recover from the crash and rejoin your network.

Sorry Kopkiwi - forgot about that DVDplayer thing - I had that same issue - doh! How quickly I forget...

Easiest way to get that advancedsettings.xml file onto the appletv is to download and install filezilla - you can set it up so that you can have one panel open on a folder on your PC and the other open in a folder on the appleTV - then you can just drag the file over to the appleTV. Easier to create the file with notepad on your PC I think.

To be honest I havent used any of the fancy features of XBMC - but I know you can use it to create artist libraries etc to make it nicer to navigate your collections.

XBMC is still a bit of work in progress on appleTV - but its reasonably solid. As I said - I am just having occasional issues with a bit of intermittent stuttering on video files. I havent had any issues with it connecting to my PC shares though - that seems to have been very good.

Thanks for the help guys. Will have a play around tonight. Though it's nice in the Capital City today, so will have to wait until later tonight. Need to take advantage of the sun and go for a run :D

Might have a play around, but at the same time make a 2nd copy of all my music in ALAC so I can just use itunes if all goes tits up, so I can AT LEAST listen to some form of music.

That's exactly what I've done...
Apple Lossless to use in the standard Apple TV menu.
With FLAC for XBMC.

I do prefer the convenience of having XBMC running off a HDD attached to my router though, it means I never have to turn my computer on to play my music / movies. It's all about getting the glitches sorted, the database perfect (metadata like album art and artist info is your friend).
Once the hard work is done, it's all good.

Yeah I had the same fluffing around with the Acer and setting it up.

Any suggestions for a cheap HDD to hook up to the modem and use as a NAS? My current one doesn't do it.

What router do you have? And does it support USB HDD's? I use a Western Digital 1TB powered drive in combination with an Airport Extreme and it works just fine.

Nah doesn't support USB unfortunately.

Cool - are you hard wiring your ATV2 to your router?
Part of me thinks that playing back lossless audio files should only be done over ethernet... but the logical part of me disagrees... I'm sure those with 'golden ears' could hear the difference?

Yep all wired. Router is right next to my ATV2 so it' just easier.

Any chance you have a link to your router that you are using?
