How do people using something like the HDHomeRun manage their recorded TV?
As each PC is basically a standalone HTPC what happens if you try to set something to record and there are no free tuners at that time? Will it know this and prompt you or will you just get nothing recorded?

Also if you record something on one PC does it show up in Recorded TV on the PCs?

1. If you think you're going to reach the tuner limit just add another HDHomeRun to the network. $199 is a small price to pay for peace of mind. I've yet to run into the issue of not enough tuners, hopefully someone else will chime in.

2. Sharing of recorded shows is entirely dependant of the type software/server setup you use, and is independent of the HDHomeRun. But yes you could have it setup so either all recorded shows go to one central server, or are stored locally, but shared across the network.

yeah this is my main issue with windows media center, i tended to record the same shows on multiple computers.

im attempting to use xbmc with pvr and for the record as the backend. but this kind of defeats the point of the hdhomerun being networked, since the frontend computers all connect to a main server for tv, and that server will be the only machine connecting to the hdhomeruns.

$199 is a good price for a dual tunner however, im thinking about getting another one.

I'm still tempted to give MythTV a go, as I'm not sold on "Windows".

for linux people there is also Eclipse.TV (previous incarnation, element htpc). can't find any references to it on geekzone though. has anyone tried it?

oh i was laughing at eclipse, mythtv is alright, the UI i think is a little out dated, but not that bad.

i really think xbmc + pvr will be a really good option (once its stable), which you could use mythtv as the backend ( i think tvhead is the preferred backend however).

both actually, getting to the tv guide in myth requires you to navigate 2 or 3 menus (its not just on the main menu) and theres no nice animation/effects of the menus (well about a year ago there wasnt, havent used it since then).

Just a quick update tested some movies out - the zotac ion itx board has no issue playign back 720 mp4s ripped from HDDVDs.

FWIW freeview over wifi seems to require wireless N on my network. b/g equipped devices seem to get the odd bit of breakup (enough to be distracting).

I've got the avermedia, no problems at all. Only thing I really want is a way for it to work with android so I can watch the simpsons on my tablet while I take a dump, but apart from that it'll all gravy
