If you have to rank your priorities for budgetary reasons, I would be inclined to go
Mains first (you have those) Centre speaker 2nd (as above, tonally matched if possible, same brand/line as your mains is usually sufficient). Sub Surrounds
Don't put your speakers too far away from the TV, it will confuse your brain that the sound is off screen yet your eyes are seeing things on screen, a weird way to describe it, but it just feels wrong.
fahrenheit: Ideally you want the transition of sounds from speaker to speaker to be as natural as possible. You don't want a Ferrari passing from left to right through the soundfield to sound like a ride-on-lawnmower as it goes through the middle.
+1. It probably pays to get the centre from the same range i.e. C6LCR. That way it'll be voiced the same, hopefully. Just my $0.02.
timmmay: Yep the sub is typically called ".1". Rear speakers are good for blu ray movies.
+1 The soundtrack on a Blu Ray kicks DVD to the kerb and leaves it there. I've been blown away by the immersive 5.1 sound on a blu ray. Worth every dollar if movies are your thing...
As for dialogue and centre speakers, I've found some DVDs hard to hear the dialogue over the background noise. I've got the IcontrolAV app for iphone for my Pioneer app, and it allows me to raise the dialogue volume independent of the rest of the system (tilt to increase). Much easier than having to go into settings and raise or lower the centre channel volume.
