Panasonic's plasma model numbers work like this
X: junk, do not buy it
U: bottom end
UT: I think this is a U with 3D
ST: low end
GT: mid end
VT: high end

I think you will have to spend more money unless you have an idea of good picture quality that doesn't match a dedicated videophile's expectations. I advise against buying a 768p plasma like the X.

With that budget you could afford a P50U30Z. It is available for $1600 but is periodically available for $1500 or less.

Thanks for the feedback. I reckoned given the age of my gear it would be a bit greedy to expect top of the range so i took the insurance offer and spent 2 hours in JB yesterday restocking the house entertainment.

I just finshed puting my new systems and the Bl@@dy flatpack entertainment unit together tonight but still fiddling

Ended up getting the 50inch Panasonic U series. Don't need the 3d. Got JB to price match the weeken noel leeming sale (Great timing Mr Leeming)
I have connected it up to the SCBTT775 panasonic home theatre system (HT). This has built in wifi so it can use DNLA and see my laptop.

My living rooms seems too small now!! but looking forward to the rugby on it once i get a new scart to component for my mysky box.

However I have hooked up the PS3 but cant get 5.1 out of it.

I have connected the PS3 to the TV HDMI1. The HT unit is connected via HDMI 2 which has ARC (audio return channel) however the audio only appears to be 2.1. The Sound settings on the PS3 only recognise it as 2 channel output.

I did have the PS3 connected to the HT which was connected to the TV but i had to change inputs on both the TV and HT. It seems too complicated for the family. Does anyone know if the set up i have should pass a 5.1 audio signal through the tv to the HT

Does anyone else have this HT set up with a PS3?

Finally last request- Any picture settings for the tvTHP50U30Z, the colours aren't quite as rich as my old tv. (people look slightly washed out)

Its one of the original boxes. Scart only. HDMI was but a glint in a technicians eye

If your into the Rugby, time to ugrade to MySky HDi to watch it in HD on your new HDTV I reckon, it looks excellent.

Do sky discount existing customers upgrading. I paid out $600 for the old one i don't fancy losing it and forking out another $600 for an HDi.

Also I reckon there will be a few games on Freeview in HD.

Give them a call and ask. When we ugraded three odd years ago from the original MySky to HDi it was a one off $49 charge.

I had a quick look online at Freeview and couldn't see anything that says the RWC is in HD.

Im interested to know why you think its greedy. What do you pay insurance for if its not to replace something you lose or gets damaged ?

We deal with computer insurance situations all the time and it entirely depends on your policy.

Biggest problem we end up with, is the argument that if a customer was to buy a 5 Series BMW, why 2 years later should they get a 1 series with the same spec as this isn't "like for like".

We are with Medical Assurance and I have to say they are expensive, but when something goes wrong, they are there. I recall being broken into, replacing my gear the next day, and the money being in my account the day after. I bought like for like. I offered to pay the upgrade price between the model I had and the model I wanted, and they wouldn't accept it and just paid for the newer better unit.
