Just checked out the offers: Between the LG 42LK450 (about $810; I would have purchased one if the $745 price above had been available!) and the Panasonic TH-L42U30Z (about $950) pictures are very similar; both are excellent, and better than most others than the very high end LED models. The difference between is peripheral vision on the Panasonic is much better than the LG eg sitting on an angle the Panasonic picture is much clearer. Also, the Panasonic has more ports. The Panasonic does not resolve .MKV movie files via USB unlike the LG which resolves almost any media you throw at it.
I think the Panasonic is worth the extra $100 and will go for one of those most likely in a weeks time.
Cheers,
Al.

I find consumer reports useful, though you have to use your own brain a little of course.

You can often get good discounts when bond and bond or noel leeming have a 20% of special on all tvs. I got a sony 40 inch LED one for just over $1k after a price drop and then 20% off, and I think LED is worth the additional money, due to better colours, cheaper running costs, potentially longer life than CFLs, and sexy thin. In a few years they will all be LEDs rather than CFL.

They are a good starting point, but I find other peoples reviews, more useful, such as those posted on amazon.

Interestingly, CFL are still recommended over LED for color critical applications like photographic retouching. For that use, more than TVs, LEDs are far too bright as well, but for TVs it doesn't matter.

That is a brilliant price; it is a nice set and at that price sort of beats the Panasonic except for the ports and poor sideview. Front on the picture on the LG was a tad better than the Panasonic. Criticisms I had read was the blacks on the LG were a bit grey, but I could not see that unless viewed from an angle. Oddly, both sets with same source the Panasonic was much crisper and whiter on white text than the LG, but on other high res movies they very close, with the LG being slightly better/more realistic.
If the LG had the ports (check the specs) it would be IMHO a clear winner.

If there are any techy folks or others who have a better knowledge of these 2 models please speak up and add to the thread.
Thanks,
Alistair.

Farmers in Tauranga advise they do not discount (except for sales).

Ended up getting the Panasonic TH-L42E3Z.
Fantastic picture normally, but watching Harry Potter which has lots of dark scenes its awful because in these scenes its constantly changing its brightness level, almost like breathing eg one part you can see the dark scene next part its hardly visible.
Eco mode is off, brightness is up backlight is up.
When I go to menu and adjust the levels on a dark part (it pauses when running a usb file) the brightness is fine, but as soon as menu is exited, the brightness falls off again.
I have tried the same program source on DVD and USB source and its the same.
I have tried the same program source on my PC and brightness is stable.

Last night I was watching a freeview movie and the effect was the same its really disconcerting, and I hope not a bug in the model firmware.
Any ideas please; I hope this is not another faulty equipment which I seem to attract!
Cheers,
Alistair.

If you are often buying the cheapest, then you are likely to attract things that have problems :) eg you pay for what you get.

That said , I watched Harry Potter on mine some time ago, a Sony LED backlit one, and didn't have any problems with the brightness fluctuating. It was a very dark movie, but it was constantly dark, so it sounds like it is a software issue with the tv. CFL backlit ones can flicker, but that wouldn't explain the problem you are having.
