JimmyH: Just out of interest, how did you get VLC to tune Freeview? Would be most interested in a quick howto.

I have a USB tuner for my laptop, never thought of using VLC with it.

Wasn't easy and found out by accident.
Under Media menu go to Open Capture Device.
Set Capture Mode to DVB Direct Show.
Select DVB-T
Enter Multiplex Frequency. (http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/digital-terrestrial-i-8.html ).
Then hit Play.
Once operating the channel can be changed under the Playback menu - Program.
Was surprised it all worked as I didn't know it could do it.
Haven't figured out if it wil record yet.

Well - I can report it worked perfectly (again) on a Pana DMR-BWT700.
Everything is sitting happily in iTunes / my iPad after converting.
I suppose it's no quicker than ripping discs? I never timed it... but there's no cost as the physical media doesn't need to be purchased.
Very cool.
