Personally, I'd forgo a full HD projector initially, and invest a decent amount on the screen. That'll make a big difference to your viewing enjoyment.
That's some great advice, thanks sen8or - it's great to get input from someone who has compared many different projectors... I mostly don't notice the rainbow effect on my cousin's DLP that I am borrowing (just a cheaper BenQ), but it is definitely there and it seems like a bit of a compromise to put up with it when LCD does not have the effect at all.
I will keep an eye out for the panasonic models, see if I can pick up one on a cheap deal.
jjnz1 - I would consider that as an option but it just seems like a lot of hassle (waiting times etc.). I would imagine repair costs would be fairly high as it is specialised - I doubt there would be much competition out there.

Yep, I think that the NZ retailers have to rethink the prices...
And about the service, I'm doing a few hours for a company as a professional electronics technician here in NZ and I wouldn't even piss to direction of Panasonic NZ, that's how bad and expensive the "service" is that they give.
Mitsubishi 4000 and Vievsonic Pro8200 on my sight, I tried to bargain with Rapallo, but even the new bargain price I feel like I'm sucker if I buy from them (free shipping and all).
I do understand that it's not easy for the resellers here to compete with the US prices, but it's luckily still a market economy that we have here... Deal with it...
Edit: The prices in Trade me are a joke.... for new and 2nd hand...
