Dkeeper: Please excuse my inexperience here.. are you saying that the tv will attempt to upscale the incoming signal to the tv's native level. In other words the tv will likely do some level of upscalling?

Sure am. It simply has to, otherwise your SD signal would only fill up the top left 2/3rds of the screen (if your TV is 720P or the top 1/4 if it's full HD). The TV itself does up or down scaling to fit incoming signals onto it's panel. As mentioned earlier they don't seem to put much emphasis on upscaling SD inputs these days so often they don't look very good on a modern 720/1080 HD set.

You could splash out for an Onkyo TX-NR809 new. Can probably be had for about $2k, but they'll upscale just about any input known to man all the way up to 1080p and beyond. And they're fantastic receivers if you're in the market one. Then again, they do lots of "stuff" and I like "stuff".

Any 700-series Onkyo from about the 706 upwards or the 800-series 805 upwards will do what you want. The 600 series doesn't have S-Video inputs, which is a pity as JB HiFi have them on special at the moment.

There's plenty of Yamaha and Pioneer (and probably even Denon & Marantz etc) receivers that do much the same thing.

Not a cheap solution unless you're in the market for a receiver obviously.

That Jaycar unit looks overpriced unless it's professional equipment.

There are some old movies that have been released on VHS or Laser Disc that aren't really available on anything better. You do realise there are LD players with YPbPr output? Probably VGA too. But they might be hard to find.

So long as it doesn't crudely force 60Hz output it should work ok. The PSU might need a transformer.

It's important whatever converter you get doesn't force 720p output as many TVs are locked into severe overscan when given a 720p signal not to mention an extra rescaling. Turn your TV's overscan off if you want better quality.

For DVDs you would be better off with a Blu-ray player and its HDMI output than converting S-video to YPbPr. You must've been an early adopter to find a DVD player with S-video as its best output.

Many classic movies are now available on Blu-ray. For reasons that defy explanation the main publisher Criterion likes to Region A lock all their releases so you'd need a multiregion player to play them.

Found a converter at dinodirect.com (on page 6 searching under the word "converter")

On special at 72% off. It's 100v-240v S-Video to HDMI and in the air on it's way to me now.

ahh, the reason I'm sticking to the old format is that I have 2 x large amps, 3-4 LD players, 4plus DVD players, and VHS to boot all to go with 1,800 to 2,000 LD's and 1,500 DVD's with almost no duplications. So I hope to squeeze a few more years out of them yet.

This was a format that encoded video as a composite signal, 9/10 using S-video will not improve the picture !

The exception is if you had one of the last Pioneer LD players (or similar) with digital signal processing that separated luminance (Y) from chrominance (C), performed video processing then recombined the signal for output. Even then you'll only get a better picture if the YC filter in your display is better than the filter in your LDP.

What model LDP's fo you have ?

Experience has shown modern AVRs do not that good a job of converting SD inputs to HDMI etc. , all they do is add convenience.

For the best picture quality it's best to keep each video stream in it's native format.

The other thing is no current AVR that I know of has an RF-input for decoding Dolby Digital off LD.

For that you'll need a separate AC3-RF demodulator box.
This converts the analogue AC3-RF signal from your LDP to digital form that an AVR can recognise.

Hi to ilovemusic:

My main gear is - Pioneer VSA E06 amp, Pioneer CLD D99 LD player, Pioneer DV 717 DVD player

Secondary (also hooked up) - Pioneer CLD 925 LD player
Monitor is a Samsung UA32B6000VM

Spare amp is a Pioneer VSX D25 (err was that VSX D2S, one of the two)

I guess, worst comes to worst I'll be able to use an HDMI port into the TV which will free up some other inputs.

The CLD-D99 is one of the last great Pioneers and can benefit from S-video connection.
