Trademe has been mentioned, but if you have the cash it's worth a look. I bought a big roll when I did my house, listed what I had left and sold the part roll for close to what I paid for the whole thing.
I went in to try and buy some bog-standard solder a few months ago, and discovered that they no longer even sell that.
I used to go in there all the time for stuff, but my trips have got less and less over the last couple of years. On Ye Olde days they had a lot of stuff I needed/wanted, and a few fairly knowledgeable and helpful sales staff.
All the parts, cables and various gegaws seem to have been phased out, along with the good staff. Now they just seem to have a range of TVs and plug-and-go Chinese consumer products, on which they are not terribly price competitive with other retailers, and a collection of minimum-wage sales-droids who don't seem to know much about what they sell or have much interest in helping customers.
Jaycar is pretty much what DSE used to be, and I now go there. However (in Wellington) it is sadly inconveniently located, with lousy car parking. Unless DSE has something on sale that I want at a good price (fairly rare), I don't really go there any more.
