lchiu7: Maybe because he thinks the external DAC does a better job than the one in the AVR. And for most AVR's if the input is digital, then you cannot always apply sound processing effects to the signal such as Dolby Pro Logic Music etc. Of course one could argue that this not music in its purist form but many people like the soundfield enhancements they provide.

Yes I'm a purist, I don't want any effects added to my music. I use direct mode on my AVR amp which bypasses the internal processing and internal DAC. My external DAC is of a much better quality then the one in the squeezebox and the one in my AVR.

music is only two channels, right? so using two front speakers would be enough? necessary to use a sub as well?

I personally don't like using a sub for music as I think it adds to much low end. I have large front speakers though so I probably get enough bass without a sub.

my current front speakers are bookshelf speakers so don't think they've got sub built-in, or even if built-in the quality won't be good.  Part of my project of moving avr/speakers out from study to living room is to replace front speakers.

Also thanks for the explanation of why using an external DAC vs using AVR.

Bookshelf speakers are usually ported with a cutoff way higher than a sub will go, so even if you add one you have to have a highpass on the speakers to stop them flapping around hitting the limits on moderate volumes. Some older subs had speaker level in and out on them which would put something inline with the small speakers to cut the bass, but most now are made only for home theater so just have RCA or XLR inputs on them.

I used DBPowerAmp to convert ape and flac files to alac, successfully streamed it from iMac to Appletv to AVR. SWEET!
Two issues:
1) DBPowerAmp is only from for a month. A month later it goes back to the free version. I'm yet to check if the conversion function is still available in the free version;
2) My ape and flac files come with a cue file which states the start/finish time of each song. Conversion doesn't take that into account. Now my alac files are all one file per album - quite annoying as I can't choose which songs to play. Have anyone had any experience in this?

Just saw this: going forward, even apple tv can be spared, AVR will access iTunes lib directly.
