Yes, I got license. Yey!! I can give some life to those TIVO recordings :) as MPEG2 is native format for TIVO.

raspbmc is adding PVR support, which is awesome.

and the developer of raspbmc uses for the record and is in talks about including the 4tr addon in the raspbmc pvr release.

http://www.4therecord.eu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=2722

currently im using xbian though, but raspbmc is talking big (once again) saying the next release will be faster than xbian (not sure if i believe this, raspbmc developer seems to defend it way too strongly, both have their strengths but xbian is a lot faster atm).

My Pi finally turned up yesterday. It came with a preloaded SD card and everything seemed to work. Then I made the mistake of flashing the newest Raspbian image and now I have a "sticky" keyboard (if I type "hello" then I might get "heeeeeeeeeeeello"). I also tried RISC OS but it crashes as soon as I move the mouse. Tonight I think I'll be restoring my backup of the preloaded image :P

Just a heads up, I saw on /. this week the USB drivers are buggy and causing problems - even on networking since the adapter is connected via USB as well. Anyone noticed this?

reven,

is it true that the xbian os is overclocking/overvolting the pi?  i tried it and it was really smooth and fast but my pi gets really warm.

its overclocking the pi, but not overvolting.

raspbmc is also overclocking the pi, just slightly less.

i believe my pi is overclocked at 840 where raspbmc was at 800.

but thats just the developer for xbian trying to get the perfect overclocking for all pis. raspbmc will likely do the same.

im also going to batch convert all my posters/fanart/thumbnails etc to lower quality images with more compression.  currently a lot are around 200kb in size, which isnt needed, and puts more strain on the pi.  the only real issue im having with the pi still is the menus for libraries are slow (oh and dts stutters)

I have been following this and the other thread with interest given how low cost the Raspberry Pi is.

It seems it's getting close to prime time as a media streamer.

The two areas that were unresolved for me were

- IR remote control. It appears that XBMC (the Pi version) support the MCE remote and I have one of those lying  around with the sensor. It can be emulated by the Harmony remote which would be what I would want

- bitstreaming HD Audio. That is less clear. I dont' really care if the device can or cannot decode HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master) which I suspec would require a licence, so long as it is able to extract that audio from a media file (MKV, ts or m2ts) and pass the bitstream over HDMI where an external AVR can decode it. Lots of Googling has not revealed anything definitive on that yet.

But for $40 or so, it's worth a punt just for a hobby exercise.

Some USB things are still struggling, especially the USB sound devices. I also noticed a sticky key problem when the keyboard is on a hub with other usb devices. If the KB is directly connected to the Pi's USB it's no worries.

Latest version of XMBC runs well, which is normal as improvements in software are happening all the time.

1. the IR remote should work fine

2. it can decode DTS but in software at the moment, so is cpu intensive.  however it can pass this on directly to your receiver and let it decode the data.  so you shouldnt have any problems.

Cool. Then I am getting one and it will be a weekend project.

Out of interest where are folks buying them from?

Element14 has them for $48.26+GST but is there anywhere better?

Forgot to ask. Does the current software (presumably people are using XBMC) decode our Freeview AAC audio?

i believe it does. i record from DVB-T (1xUSB) and DVB-S/2 (Quad Tuner) and havent found a recording i cannot playback yet. but i have no idea what recording was recorded on what device, so i may have only been viewing DVB-S recordings.
