sub: Sorry - haven't read the whole thread, but can someone tell me the preferred place to buy Raspberry Pi these days, and how long do that take to get to NZ? Also be interested to here whether you got a PSU and case from the same supplier.

I develop some PVR software called NextPVR which runs on Windows, and recently built and released a PVR addon for XBMC. I've only seen it working Windows, but others have started using it with their Raspberry Pi devices in RaspBMC RC5 or OpenELEC, and I'm keen to take a look at how it runs.

hey sub, yeah element14 is best place for raspberrypi, should only take a few days to get to you.

case best place is modmypi.com, element14 takes way too long to ship their case (ordered one a few weeks ago, no case yet)

power supply, ive used the following successfully
- iPhone usb power charger
- Computer usb port
- TV usb port

if you need someone to test nextpvr with the pi let me know, currently using 4tr but would happily switch back to nextpvr if worked on pi.

I understand that power supply quality's important, and TV USB sockets can cause problems. If you have problems get a 1A USB power supply. I'm using on old phone charger one with no problems.

I ordered a case from ebay, which should be here before long. It's working fine without a case, it's so light it just hangs in mid air supported by the cables.

Not all tvs will be able to supply the required current for the pi. I had some weird issues when trying to run the pi off the usb port of my Sony tv, but, it works fine with a mobile phone adapter.

Hopefully I haven't stuffed up by ordering a case from them too, causing both to be delayed waiting for the case.

they'll just send your pi first and the case later (or never... ive emailed and cancelled my case and will just buy another one from modmypi.com)

The case won't delay it. The Pi will turn up in 1-2 days, the case in December.

just cancelled my case, they said approx delivery time is end of october. so personally i would just buy one from modmypi.com

Did you order from Element 14 NZ website? When I searched it on their website, it says "Out of Stock" and when I clicked the "Check more stock" link it says "Supplier lead time 32 days"?

Ive had my Raspberry Pi now for a couple of months and it works great. I wonder if anyone knows where I can get a thin HDMI cable from, one like this :

Yep. Worst case, it takes a month or so. I'll just have to live with the delay. It'd be nice to have it in a few days, but I can wait.

Have been using my Raspberry Pi for about 4 months mainly as an XBMC player. its now permanently attached to the back of my secondary TV (a 47" Sony Bravia) and gets its power from a GB router mounted in the same location that happened to have a USB port. Its working really well.

I have a Media Centre (windows 7) upstairs that has 3TB of movies and TV shows, but I found I really needed to install NFS (using a licensed copy of Hanewin NFS) to get the 1080p Blu rays working flawlessly especially with DTS or DTS-HD audio,

Decoding is snappy and I have overclocked which helps keep the menus snappy as well. I know this decreases lifetime, but its only down from like 20 years to 8, and I figure in 8 years it will be long gone. For the price £25 when I picked it up in the UK, who cares if it dies!

Biggest issue now is how I can get TV streaming to it. Media Centre will not act as a back-end, and since I have to make sure my wife and daughters can use the media centre, swapping to a shareware application (read buggy and unreliable) like MediaPortal is not really an option.

I have an XBOX 360 purely as an extender just so I can get a live TV channel. It’s noisy with that loud fan but works. I heard that the ARM Linux source code from a Linksys router that was a Microsoft Extender was available and downloaded it, but its way out of my league to get this running on the PI. Anyone in this group up to a challenge?

mediaportal isnt shareware. i dont know of any pvr applications that are shareware....

mediaportal, for the record (this is only a backend/server) and my personal favourite nextpvr/gbpvr are good alternatives to WMC.

currently im using nextpvr on my raspberrypi, cant get HD stuff working well on it just yet (mkvs work fine just ts files are giving me trouble, pi issue not tv server issue).

my setup is basically backend server running nextpvr and for the record (quad tuner, two tuners for each program), pis are running against nextpvr, 2 HTPCs running xbmcbuntu/openelec are connecting to for the record (having some slight issues with nextpvr atm, should be fixed soon).

xbmc is the best frontend ive used, only wish it could get nextflix somehow... playon is the best option there... which isnt that great...

We have been using GB-PVR (& I'm just about to go/upgrade to NextPVR) for over seven years now. We don't watch any live TV anymore (& haven't for years & years) & the wife also has a sleep problem so as well as all the normal viewing to be recorded there is also all the extra stuff for when she can't sleep so it gets a hammering. In those seven years we have only missed two recordings (apart from when we get a power cut) & one of those was my own fault as it ran out of disk space to record onto which I think is a pretty good record for any software.

OK so I don't update the production PC to the latest version as soon as it comes out instead I wait for a few weeks (& test on my play PC) to see what bugs get found & fixed first before it gets anywhere near affecting the WAF situation.

OK so MediaPortal is Free, which to my old brain is shareware. I used it about 6 years ago and recall not having a single day when it didn't fall over, usually with no sound or no picture or a full PC crash.

I will accept that maybe GBPVR and MediaPortal have improved since then, but did just see on the Media Portal site that is is still an Alpha release.

My point was can we get the Raspberry PI to run as a Windows MCE Extender?
