Ideally I'd be looking for a system whereby freeview was recorded centrally, but any of the clients could see an EPG and book shows to record back on the central server.

That's a whole different kettle of fish.

I have nextpvr feeding into plex for client playback it scheduling is done via web site or next Pvr client.

There is supposedly ways of integrating xbmc to mythtv (and maybe mediaportal?) but I haven't seen it going

if you're use to windows i would recommend using fortherecord.eu for the backend, or mediaportal (personally i prefer 4therecord)

if you're use to linux i would recommend tvheadend, or mythtv.  i found tvheadend easier to setup.

for clients i would recommend xbmcpvr branch.  or if you're running windows on the machines you can use mediaportal frontend which will work with 4therecord backend as well as the mediaportal backend (of course).

Exactly what I do, using any number of mobile devices (android phone/ tablet) as well as every laptop and PC in the house.

Windows 7 Pro (Media server) running Mediaportal and 4therecord (not Argus tuner tho')
MacMini running Bootcamp in the lounge to drive Receiver and TV.  This runs Mediaportal, 4therecord, My TV Series, Moving Pictures etc
Every Windows machine in the house has the 4TR client tools installed so can schedule and show via EPG, watch Live TV, recorded TV etc
Got the Android bist and pieces as well so can control it all remotely.

Since everything is available 24x7, all mapped drives can be accessed from anywhere so regardless of the machine can watch any .ts file ... wired or wireless.

You are seeking mythtv!

I have a fairly basic sempron in a largish case with about 4T disk space. An hdhomerun tuner, and a lot of ripped videos. Runs mythtv through mythbuntu distro, thinking of moving to LinHES.

Frontends are acer revos, running mythfrontend and xbmc, depending on my mood. Again running linux.

Music is two squeezeboxes, running back to the same server running squeezeboxserver.

Wouldn't change anything really.
