Apple TV2 + Jailbreak with aTV Flash (black)

Use it combination with my NAS and it's brilliant. aTV Flash makes for easy connection and can browse files using the native interface, also plays pretty much everything (.mkv).

Airplay is pretty handy too.

I was pretty luck and managed to get mine through the refurb store when the ATV3 launched. I was tossing up whether to get the ATV2 or 3. I was SO glad I decided to get the ATV2 when I found out they hadn't been able to jailbreak the 3.

Personally wouldn't get one if jailbreak wasn't an option.

ATV 2 in the house, used at least twice a week
Stream content from iPod to ATV via Airplay - love it,

Yet to try renting anything

Interesting insight into the use of the device by this technology community.

We're looking at bundling the Apple TV along with some iTunes credit in with our new Ultra Fast Broadband product as an additional incentive for customers to switch over to fibre from ADSL.

My main hang-up with the device is it's lack of NZ-content & Television out of the box. If the next software update brings it onto the same platform as iPhone, iPad iPod etc.... I'd be completely sold!

I would be surprised if this offer made sense in terms of the value it creates for you.

for one thing, you are unlikely to get any decent margin whatsoever from Apple as a reseller (if anything.t al)- so really all you will be doing is passing it through to the customers, who can easily alreay go and get one if they want. (and if you are giving it away for free then it is going to cost you a lot of money, which is hard to recoup in the low margin UFB world). In other words, if it is going to cost you $150 to give away a product worth $150, then why not just give customers a $150 credit on their account.

Secondly, as a general rule the customer will need to be already 'in' the apple ecosystem (but not own an Apple TV) to really get any value out of an Apple TV, which immeidately means half the market (or more) will not find it appealing

thirdly, as you mention, disctinct lack of content in NZ iTunes and no decent apps like Netflix without going via unblock-us or similar, which you definitely don't want to be supporting or encouraging directly

fourthly, if you are bundling in the Apple TV, then customers will expect you to support it - more cost for you.

fifthly, trying to even talk to apple direct is going to be very difficult. you simply aren;t big enough for them to bother with. If you are just going to buy the devices direct and resell them, they might not like that either if they find out about it

If you want to bundle in some kind of media type device, what about a roku box or similar? Or maybe even a Ouya (which can be a media centre AND gaming machine)

but good luck either way!

I have an ATV 3 and use it only about once per month if there is a movie on I want to watch, other than that I don't really see the point in it (my ipad has more features).

I brought it because I thought one could sync it with itunes for the music and video content, but it turned out that I needed to leave my PC running all the time with itunes/ airplay running (or whatever) which I dont do as I keep all my electronic devices turned off when not using them.

I think if I could sync content through it via iTunes and I could run IOS apps on it, I would be happy with it.

This would work quite nicely if you had unmetered traffic to iTunes movie rentals.

It would sway me to you instead of another provider if all others things were (mostly) equal.

Unfortunately, no UFB for me for at least 2 years, but if you did VDSL (do you?) I would look.

You'd probably also want to bundle an HDMI cable - these little suckers don't have any way of connecting them to a TV in the box, which is very un-Apple (in fact, every other media box or even DVD player has at least some sort of cable packaged with it - usually RCAs).

I'll send you a PM also.

Get yourself a Mybook Live external Hard drive, it has a built in iTunes server, you can put your iTunes library there are get it from the ATV3

Yip, I've had a kind Apple reseller PM me and point this out :)

VDSL is our main broadband product - we're a business provider but we don't discriminate against residential customers (half of our residentials are running businesses from home as it is..).

lol - I have a PC, it has a builtin iTunes server, I just don't leave it switched on :)

But I will take a look at it - sounds interesting.
