I have just confirmed by experiment that the before and after buffers are not done when recording two consecutive programs, if you are watching something else live. This can mean missing the beginning and/or end of programs, especially if the two consecutive programs are on different channels, eg a "7:30-8:30" program on Prime may well start before a "7:00-7:30" program on TV1 finishes.

That makes sense if you think about it. Watching something live requires a tuner. Doing a before and/or after buffer requires two tuners, as there is a period of overlap. But you have occupied one tuner by watching something live, so the overlaps are skipped. And not turning the box off (ie, onto standby) at night means that all overnight recordings will suffer the same fate.

I have also confirmed by experiment that the buffers are recorded if you are viewing something previously recorded. That does not require a tuner.

The moral of the story is clear:

1. Don't watch something live when two consecutive programs are booked - watch a recording instead! Even watching the program being recorded is ok.
2. Try to avoid booking things at the same time, or near each other. On Sky 1, the movies channels, and Discovery for example, programs are repeated, so you may be able to choose times that don't conflict. For example, I book the early morning version of Married With Children, so it doesn't conflict with the 6:00 news. Doesn't usually matter, but if I forget and book a movie that starts at 6:30 or 7:00, I could lose the end of a program.

Perhaps MySky should give warning of this type of conflict. I think it should, as program material is potentially lost.

from a marketing point of view, why would they admit failings of their system, and point out that for it to work well, you need to follow certain guidelines and not just do things the easy way?

the bulk of their target market just doesnt want to hear things like that... (unfortunately)

I meant that the box should display a message similar to the "recording clash" message, not that they should document the issue.

Sod's law,

As soon as i praise Mysky it starts playing up. On saturday i recorded a programme for my daughter. I didn't watch during the showing but the replay jumped forward all the time so a 30min recording took about 10mins to show cutting out lumps of the programme.Last night i had a couple of pauses in the picture while watching TV3. Now tonight i had to switch over to the terrestrial signal to watch the TV3 news. Every time I changed to TV3 through sky the picture will freeze within 20 seconds. Has anyone else had this? I didn't have any problems on the documentary channel so wondering if it is a transmission problem from sky or a problem with the box?

mortonman, yes I get that problem, it only happens to me when I'm recording something else at the time on the other tuner and watching (or trying to watch!) something different. I usually get round the problem by watching what I was recording, as everything else is unwatchable, then pulling out the power cable at the end and putting it back in again. The hard reset seems to solve the problem.

I just checked a TV3 recording made earlier today. It was fine. Nothing else was beign recorded at the same time.

The closest I get to what you describe is on Prime - apparently the cpu can't keep up when skipping at 30x, and the refresh rate goes way down. Makes it hard to skip commercials. That stopped for a while, but started up again maybe a month ago.

the hard reboot, as with most computers, seems to be the solution to 90% of problems! Although no matter how many times I try it the software never improves ;)

Quick update. My original Panasonic DVD/HDD recorder spent 2 weeks at Next before I got the call that the problem was beyond their techs and they had forwarded the unit to Panasonic. There is a 10 day backlog on a Pana tech having a look.

I have relented and ordered MySky which is due for an install on Thursday. Might be time to make use of the GeekZone blog and detail my adventures with MySky.

Yours
