Ok after watching. That clip I. Get all the. Complaints about the connector. What a. Silly idea to make it proprietors and SO bulky on the ends. Plus (as mentioned) if it's less than. 3m long....

I actually think it's. A good idea to have a central box link for all your devices, makes for shorter cables in general, but why the linking able couldn't use a standardised HDMI I just don't know \o/

keen to see the long term opinion.
I watched a few curved screens toady and found them so so..
the picture was too easy to find fault with the content as others have said, and all i could think of was
"how is that gonna look when its hung on my flat wall?"

Got the screws today. Putting the Samsung up was a lot easier than the Panasonic.

First the TV comes with less polysterene pieces around it and the big one piece in the photo is actually very handy to keep the TV protected and the right height so you can attach the base without having to get the TV up first. And the Samsung felt a lot lighter than the Panasonic.

I couldn't get the soundbar setup the way I had before - Source (HDMI siwtch) -> Soundbar - > TV because it actually pairs with the TV automatically so I plugged sources (HTPC and Amazon Fire TV) directly to the box and the TV remote controls the Soundbar volume level. Pretty easy.

The HTPC supports up to 4096 resolution but the Intel drivers weren't really good and kept flickering so I changed it to 1080 and all is good. Amazon Fire TV automatically adjusted and playing well.

The Samsung menus seem a lot easier to navigate than the Panasonic.

Now to use it for the next couple of weeks.

Looks good, I've been admiring Samsung as a brand for about 10 years now when I took a punt on one of their early digital (3mpix?) cameras... They have yet to disappoint, but how much issues is that funny plug?

The box is actually not a big deal as it can hide behind the TV after all - looking at it the benefit of having just a power cable and a single cable going to the TV is pretty compelling, instead of having three HDMI cables going, plus aerial plus power...

this separate media box is nothing new - pioneer used a similar arrangement for their early plasma tv's.

what is new is the promise of easy upgradability.

the samsung box is powered through the umbilical cable ?
my old pioneer needed two power cables - one for the panel, one for the box.

what are the built in speakers like on the samsung and panny ?
is the soundbar essential ?

The external box is powered by the single cable.

Sound is good, just using the Soundbar because it is here.

Will check backlight later.

DarthKermit: I've seen a Samsung curved tv at JB Hifi. It seemed utterly pointless to me.

Its point is it's an effective marketing gimmick aimed at the kind of technically challenged people who buy $800 watches and BMWs. Ordinary people who see the adverts on television would conclude Samsung is the most advanced brand and go out and buy an $800 Samsung LCD.

I've seen the curved Samsung UA65HU9000 4K television, Panasonic 65AX800Z and a smaller LG 4k. The curve got the Samsung the centrepiece position while the AX800 had been relegated to where it wouldn't be noticed.

It's far more curved for its size than makes sense but what really put me off it was the picture quality which from what I saw of it was a typical LCD which was not what I expected. It should look better with other content but I'd sooner watch a HD CRT or a flatscreen LCD.

The AX800's picture quality was good for an LCD. I didn't think the viewing angles were as good as plasma or some other LCDs but they're good enough for most people.
