upsilon: So the DVB-T comes in a raw format anyone can view?

FTA DVB-T is normally in the clear.

FTV (Free to View) signals would require a "free" card or a special STB.

There are also Pay channels using DVB-T in some parts of the world that work in the same way as Sky.

The current plan is for freeview to be FTA so it will work without a special card or STB.

Not vague at all, it just follows on with what the rest of this thread talks about on this subject, the FreeView DVB-T service will be using HDCP protection of on its HDMI port to gain access to Hi Def images.

Also watch out for the ICT flag, if set by the broadcaster this will force the STB to only allow a downresd version of HD manterial via the analog component output. Todate in most parts of the world the ICT flag has not been used due to the early proliferation of non HDMI equipd displays. I understand that the collective major copyright holders who are HDCP protection mad (read US movie houses) have agreed to not implement the ICT flag till atleast 2012, so we can expect to be able to get 1080i images out of the FreeView boxs analog component output for some years yet.

So basically if you buy a accredited STB you get HDCP, if you go alone and DIY it with a DVB-T card or other STB you avoid HDCP completely?

Some of the non accreditied STBs might also implement HDCP over HDMI so check the details.

Just making a rough guess that FreeView may continue their relationship with Zinwell, this link indicates whats out there. There are several other manufacturers like Zinwell out there with similar products recently added to their range.

I hope that their STB work better than their web site does in Opera.

Wonder what the two USB ports are for?? External media player. i.e xvid??
