I was discussing this with a friend today in the industry and he mentioned the fact TVNZ in part don't regard this as an issue because with the DVB-T launch next year and the fact we will see the bulk of new TV sets sold in NZ with integrated DVB-T tuners that people will have access to additional Freeview channels without having to buy any additional equipment. We're also likely to see a far greater uptake of DVB-T STB's vs DVB-S STB's. While you can see their point it's still quite a misguided attitude to be taking.
So I wonder if Telstra will be treated the same way or will they be allowed to retransmit the Freeview channels? That could make things interesting for Sky in Wellington and Christchurch anyway...

Hi Sorry to dumb down this topic but I have a question about STB's and Freeview. I have a DVB-T STB that I brought back from Australia - can I use this to plug into my Sky dish (I have a splitter on the Sky cable from the dish) and get Freeview with this Aussie DVB-T STB?
No you cannot, you require a DVB-S STB to get anything from a satellite dish. Your australian DVB-T STB will never work here as the NZ DVB-T system will use mpeg4 which yours will not support. Could be useful at holding doors open purhaps.
