garvaniOn the box it says the recorder is hdtv capable, so theoretically ill be able to plug the freeview tuner into this and record tv when freeview go HD or am i missing something here?
Also has anyone got any idea on the freeview rollout other than the main centres (chch, wellington etc)? i live in blenheim and would like OTA hdtv asap but assume it won't be here till 2009 :(

The Freeview DVB-T service rolls out nationwide all at the same time which at present should be April this year.

As for the HD capabilities of your unit I suspect this is probably packaging from the Australian market and it's unlikely that you will be able to record and HD content that is transmitted in NZ.

You got my hopes up there sbiddle, but as i thought freeview is only launching in 9 centres for over the air transmission.. as can be seen on the freeview website. I dont see why i couldnt get the dvd recorder to record it when it does launch.. the set top box will decode the signal then pass it through component (or hdmi-hdcp if the boxes have it) to the dvd recoder which will then record the signal. If hdmi is an option i guess it will come down to the ICT token..
So does anyone out there have any idea on when they plan on rolling out freeview to other areas? (isnt it awesome how time and time again we get shafted for not living in a main centre

)

Ahh sorry I got your hopes up a bit there!

I meant that the DVB-T rollout will be occuring in all the regions in April that are destined for coverage. I was also under the impression that Nelson was covered but have just checked and realised it's not. It is included in the rollout plan for 87% population coverage, hopefully cyril7 may know if this expansion is definately going to occur and if so when.

It's highly unlikely that your DVD recorder can record from the HDMI port as that's probably output only and many only have component output, not component input. Speculation is that the Freeview boxes will have the ICT flag enabled on them for all HD content which would rule out using the component output to record HD content from the box even if you did have a DVD/DVR unit with component input that could handle a 720p signal.

Yeah your probably right, I havnt even opened the box of the dvd recorder yet, it dosnt really intrest me that much. so i cant confirm which inputs/outputs it has, i just noticed the HDMI, hdtv and divx logos on the box when unpacking the tv. i would much rather have a tivo like service from freeview itself (well something with a built in epg for scheduling the recording of shows)

The first phase is for 75% population coverage so you might not get it in Blenhim.

I dont understand that table but its all good. Even under the 87% coverage table Blenheim isnt on the list even though nelson is. The grampians are too far for us to recieve coverage. So its going to be some time before we get it here..
