It will have Dual HD tuners. So Yes, it is HD.

What is cool about it is it will actually be supported in NZ (Freeview+PS3 PlayTV). Meaning no need for to much homebrewing. The downside is Freeview may actually force the price to be higher than overseas (for the hardware) to match the price of their own Freeview STB's. Probably around the $300 mark.

I bought my PS3 as a MediaCenter (I dont own a single game). So the news about BluRay is great for me, I was getting annoyed at only being able to choose from a limited amount of films. I really wanted Transformers.

Just a point of interest. I have downloaded samples of the DVB-T test broadcasts currently on air now and have only partial success playing them on the PS3. That is I get video (very smooth) but no audio. Assuming that the tests are in the same format as the live ones (AVC video HE-AAC audio), and the PlayTV device is just a DVB-T tuner connected to some software on the PS3, then it is going to have to have some new software/codecs to play those broadcasts.

I dont feel HD-DVD will drop off too quickly.

Computers guys more so will stick by it for longer. The disks are cheaper and more durable.

As for the movie guys it could be worse with Blu-Ray. Forced ads, more copy protection. Sony's Style. But in the end the high gigs will pay off with the uncompressed audio.

But we must rememeber that Blu Ray is going to be HUGELY mass produced over the next 6 -12 months. Sharp has great timing with their new lazer.

My money will not go to the 'going cheap' HD-DVD hardware.

When did DVB-T come into this topic...?

1. Freeview have any power over Sony, and

2. That they want expensive STBs

Anyway, there's the odd problem with the PS3 and PlayTV

1) Currently it doesn't allow gaming concurrent with recording which could be a drag. I believe they are working on a fix.

2) The PS3 only allows one video and audio output at a time which might be a nuisance if distributing to that old bedroom TV as well.

3) Smallish hard drive might need an upgrade.

The ability to stream recorded content to the PSP is certainly cool, especially away from home.

You could be right Openmedia. But I have a feeling to have it fully supported they'll be working together.

And if, as it seems, DVB-T broadcasts in NZ will follow the UK standards (AVC/AAC) what's to stop folks then from importing PlayTV devices?
