Yes, some sanity :-)
To believe that there will be no faults within 10 years is a nonsense .
These are now ,mostly cheaply made consumer grade devices. They are not designed for a 10+ year lifespan. (if its lasts, thats a bonus)
The av Joe will not pay for goods honestly designed & built to last 10-15 years. Those days are gone, get real .
My Simpson washing machine has steel, not stainless, screws. They are all rusted over (as expected). It was build to a price point, not built to last.

My car has lasted 25years, and will last another 5 at least. So if I buy another car , can I get CGA repairs after 20 years?
Of course not.

A 10year lifespan does not mean it wont need some repairs within that lifespan. Thats reality.
Its just that now we dont repair, we replace.

People need to take some personal responsibility for there purchase decisions . Want something to last 5-10 years, then dont buy the budget model.
I feel for the poor retailer, stuck in the middle.

back on topic, I guess a reasonable TV should last 4-5 years though.
Unless its a el cheapo warehouse budget brand : mine faulted after 2 years of almost no use, it was for the spare room ,so not worth the grief of chasing a CGA repair on that.

Yep, tv should last 10 years easily. I've got my old dell LCD monitor bought in 2003'ish, still going great and gets a thrashing. Got a couple of 7 yr old flatscreen TV's too, no issues.

I entirely disagree. 10 yrs sounds very reasonable to me. For a main brand.

Maybe not for the el-cheapo brands though. CGA takes whether you bought a low/medium/high end product into account anyway. But, in some cases a high end brand may not last so long as they might include more bits that can fail.

I remember seeing recently that TVs are replaced on average every 7 years. If that is accurate, then it would be reasonable to expect them to last longer than five years.

At the end of the day the law is the ruling factor, in this case the CGA, the CGA doesn't specify by brand, so if you buy a low end Veon (is there such a thing?) or a high end smart TV from the major manufactures it's still the same rights within the CGA, if the manufactures aren't taking the law in to account when they design and build then that is their problem not the consumers problem.

To update this, pictures of the screen where taken and emailed to the retailer who have passed them on to Samsung for advice. I've always had good dealings with the retailer and expected to again. I will update once I've got more, but I suspect that the CGA will cover it fine as its only 3 years old even after the first failure.

But for Apple it's all part of the plan. On its website, the US technology firm admits it expects the mobile devices to last only 36 months.

Its watches and iPads are also assumed to last around the same time. Owners of Mac computers can hope to eke out a fourth year of use.

I had the motherboard/logic board of a 2010 Macbook Pro changed on warranty here in NZ last year. I have had "out of warranty" repairs on iPhones covered in the past as well. So my experience with Apple has been good.

Remember that in the US there is no such thing as the CGA, and Apple (although not always with great vigour) do abide by the consumer laws in the countries they operate.

For smart phones they are pretty good at keeping old devices updated, a lot better than most (if not all) of the Android devices out there. See how long Samsung keeps their smart phones updated for...

In regards to the below, My claim at Disputes tribunal has ordered the Manufacturer to replace my dishwasher of 4 year old with a new one and take back the old one.

- Manufacturer have an option to repair (at their own full expense, not just supply parts) or replace.

- If it was a retailer, there is an additional option of requesting a full refund instead of repair or replace (this is not applicable to manufacturer).

Initially Bosch claimed they are only liable under CGA to provide the parts, this was not correct. Disputes tribunal have advised they need to provide full repair including labor to fix and any additional charges to transport.

Bosch Customer Services Manager decided cost to repair including labor would be far more expensive than a new one so decided to replace it with a new one.

- I was told the new one arriving will start the warranty from the delivery date including CGA cover.

It is a bit too late now, I have bought a new one (different brand) and will sell this one on TM.

Slightly off-topic but related.

I have just lodged a Dispute with tribunal on my failed Dishwasher under CGA against the manufacturer Bosch.

We have acquired the dishwasher as brand new with our new house in June 2012 and started using it. Firstly we did not have a proof of purchase, however we managed to show our S&P of our house that it came with dishwasher and based on the serial number they said they will consider the manufacturing date as the date purchase (which is only few months before we bought the house).

We had couple of issues with it. First problem under 1 year and 2nd problem 3 weeks ago. Spent $135 x 2 for inspections from their authorized service centers so far.

The 2nd problem is a major one and it costs about 600 plus for fixing it (Water pump faulty and heating element broken). It is significant fault and Bosch said they will only provide parts for the fault and I have to bear the cost of engaging their Authorized Service Center for repairs (they charge $135 for inspection, so you can expect $500 for actual fix). I have rejected their offer and said to do a complete fix under CGA. I feel the dishwasher should last atleast 5 to 6 years. They did not agree to it and were adamant they were only liable for the parts because they are a manufacturer and not a retailer (which I don't understand).

From CGA - a manufacturer should honor what is in their express warranty (manufacturer warranty). Bosch has some terrible customer service, they took about 3 weeks to conclude that they can only provide parts.

Went and bought a new Dishwasher (westinghouse) last weekend, lodged a claim to the tribunal and waiting for a hearing date. From what I can gather the parts are about 500 dollars and repairs would be around 200 on top of it to spend and bosch will take the efforts to fight the 200 dollars in question here by sending an employee to the tribunal. The head of customer service was rather happy they save 200 dollars by sending someone to tribunal.

So, my claim was to recover the full costs of the dishwasher based on the market value plus the 2 x $135 I have already paid.

Regarding the dishwasher, what brand did you go for? I have a bosch, but it wasn't up to the build qualityof my previous Asko one, and am looking to replace it. Inside is corroding and welded spikes corroded and broke off, and the soap dispenser doesn't clip on properly, lots of little things. It is around 8 years old so near the end of the life anyway, and I guess overall it has been good. Miele have been recommended, and they advertise that they are tested to last 20 years.

I went and purchased a Westinghouse brand. It had the Cutlery tray on the top which is useful so you can remove the basket at the bottom to gain more space.

I am looking to sell my new Bosch replacement on TM and here on Gz ;)

Right, so I have an update :-)

Samsung service centre came out and looked at the TV. After all their checking and diagnostic work the repairer said that the panel had basically gone bust and taken a couple of modules with it (Wi-Fi being the main one). Completed his report indicating that he fault it was a manufacturing problem. Samsung phoned me today to state that they agree and that the repairer would be coming on Tuesday to fix at their cost... So the CGA has worked in my favour :-) The retailer was good in terms of creating the ticket with Samsung initially but then Samsung themselves where actually really good and helpful to resolve the issue.

Will be interesting to see if this new panel has any problems!
