RunningMan: @Dratsab - Swollen property law of course. It keeps putting a squeeze on things. I think it's the Creams Act :P

I'll be re-acquainting myself with the Fish and Chip Act fairly soon!

Dratsab:

afe66: You wonder why they don't change the law.

Which law needs changing?

Not necessarily change a law but something that reflects some uncertainty about the localisation accuracy.

If police won't ask for warrants because the attract of GPS location isn't accurate enough.

Is there room for flexibility there?

Maybe there is or isn't.

Has this particular issue been looked at recently?

The 'uncertainty' is probably more related to technophobia. GPS is accurate enough, the +/- of it merely needs to explained in an affidavit when a warrant is sought. Aside from which I don't think the Search and Surveillance Act is being used enough in cases like stolen phones/tablets being located via GPS - police only need reasonable grounds to believe, not definitive evidence.

In respect of the OP where an IP address has been obtained, finding out what ISP operates the pool to which it belongs is a very simple internet search after which a relatively simple production order can be obtained requiring the ISP to say who the IP address was allocated to at the relevant time. A law change isn't required, but application of existing laws is.
