tbh i wouldnt go near this kind of thing on trademe, since h264 dvb-t tuners in tvs are very hard to come by.

These TV's are legit.

The Sony's will apparently be in stores in less than 2 weeks and the Panasonic Plasma's not long after.

These TV's are legit.

The Sony's will apparently be in stores in less than 2 weeks and the Panasonic Plasma's not long after.

That one might be, but i'd still have my barge pole out when considering buying one there at this stage, as there was a fair bit of trouble with people selling mpeg2 stb's as freeview HD capable, so i'd suspect it might be similar with the TV's themselves.

Has anyone other than Sony announced new panels with DVB-T? (Sony press release)

Just to recap, heres what Sony is releasing:

V4000-series
• KDL-32V4000 32-inch BRAVIA television SRP$1899.95

Problem is that I was looking for a 37 inch Full HD panel with DVB-T. It seems that I will have to go for either a 32 inch or 40 inch and I'm not sure if I can fit a 40 inch where I'm placing the TV. I see theres a 37 inch V4000 coming out in Q4 2008 but not sure if I should sacrifice quality for quantity.

Now, I'm specifically replacing a 29 inch 4:3 CRT - currently, in terms of size I'm happy with it. Viewing distance is about 9 feet. Will a 32 inch be enough?

Those initial prices were SRP's and as I mentioned above actual retails were expected to be around 10% less.

A 32" is way too small. For a viewing distance of 9" a 50" screen is about the recommended size if you follow THX guidelines. A 32" screen would have a recommonded viewing distance of around 5" and a 40" screen of around 6.5"

As a guideline the viewing distance should be approximately 2.5 x the width of the TV.

In two stores yesterday (Sunday) - but both were playing off blueray source - and when I asked in one of them about hooking it up freeview I got a "But we all have freeview at home so we know what it looks like." and "We're too busy selling them".

I thought in this day and age of a consumer slowdown that was a bit of the silly comment to make. But oh well. There are 0ther stores...

At least not displaying a live demo is better that the DSE store in Chch who have a Uniden TV with signs plastered all over the front saying this is their Freeview|HD demo TV running @ 720p. It's a shame that it clearly wasn't - the Panasonic Plasma near it was showing the Freeview|HD Demo channel and this was very clearly HD but the Uniden was definately not using an HD source, looking at the quality I'd put money on them using the composite output of the box!

To be fair, he said he was happy with the size of his 29" at that distance. Not everyone is concerned with "recommemded viewing distance".

I think a 32" should be fine for you, it has about the same viewable height as a 29" CRT.

We are looking at getting the 32" W bravia, can anyone find some solid info that it has S/PDIF out, and that this is 5.1 channel AC3 as broadcast? We are also thinking of getting the Logitech Z5500 which has coax/optical digital input, which is why s/pdif out is necessary. This is in a confined space so a full receiver unit isnt an option.

You may have to go and look at one as Sony's NZ website just says "Digital Media Port Yes "

Yes - at least the Sony which is the first to be Freeview certified. MHEG5 is a requirement of the Freeview certification.

Sony: All BRAVIA TVs with Freeview tuners built-in will have a digital optical output to allow you to connect to a home theatre system for 5.1 channel sound (where available).

Got a KDL40W4000 tonight. There is a media port, but also an Optical Out for audio.
