Just to display my ignorance of such things, would it be worth getting a PS4 or xBox something, don't the new ones have 4k players built in ?

PS4's (any of them) do not have 4k Bluray drives. Xbox One S does and so does the new Xbox One X (due end of 2017).

I have question here and very ignorant. Would an Xbox One running plex be a good media device streaming from a central plex media server?

Or does the Shield TV option offer something that setup wouldn't?

I have an Xbox One S. It does not decode a lot of audio formats if streamed via network via Plex or USB connected HDD.

Do whatever you want to do man.

So far, it makes me smile every time I watch it. I used to install AV gear for a living, I'm pretty fussy and this has impressed the socks off me.

So far I have only fed it average content too. I watched an H.264 bluray rip of the matrix lastnight. It was an 9 gig file so a decent quality rip, but a compressed file all the same. My friend and I were both VERY impressed. The detail was insane. Looked at another UHD 2160P rip for 30mins the other night and that was very very good as well. I know I'm not using it to its full potential, almost too scared too as there will be no going back after that!

My only gripe at the moment is lack of DTS support. I have spoken to Panasonic (response time is pretty slow on help desk) and so far they assure me it should be playing DTS on an HEVC file, but it's failed on all 3 files I have thrown at it. Not sure why they would leave that out if they are supporting HEVC, seems an odd move. If it supported it I'd have no need for a separate player.

Xbox one s is a lousy media player

I bought xbox one s based on several reviews that compared it to the dedicated blu-rays and mostly reviews said it was better, as an example than samsung k8500. My intention was to watch movies through hdd plugged into a usb port. To my disappointment of 10 blu-rays movies, it only opened 1, the others gave codec error. It has not opened any movie in 4k, even the movies in 1080p with sound in dolby true hd, dts, dts hd and others it also gives codec error.

It does not support subtitles.

In microsoft store I downloaded the doby access app to get the "atmos" sound, it comes with 3 or 4 small demo videos with the "atmos" sound, they all opened and played the "atmos" sound. But curiously when I went to open the demonstration videos of dolby that I have in hdd, all gave a codec error. And it is not due to the configuration, because I left the xbox sending the sound via streaming and the video in 4k for my denon 6300h and my tv is a lg 4k uj6565.

Anyway, it's a real misunderstanding, since any $ 50 tv box runs any kind of codec and multichannel sound (with kodi). I have a tv box that opened and runs all the movies that xbox does not play.

At last it is a great deceit and loss of time and money. It is my warning to those who like me think about buying it as a media player center.

Thanks so much for this post, I was thinking about purchasing a XB1 S but since it will have issue with playing files.

So glad I didn't do an impulse buy

Panasonic hardware is lousy at playing back media files. Half of the time you get no audio.

You'd be better off with a media PC or Oppo.

I have a (newly acquired) 4k tv and an Xbox One S. Have yet to try the Xbox version of VLC for 2160p media. Will advise after some in-depth testing...

Personally I got the tv for games...will be getting a One X when it come out

As everyone has said, shield is the best option.

Me personally? I'm 100% satisfied with my Xbox One S running Plex. Although my ripped 4K movies needed to be 'Optimized' to stream to plex (rather than optimizing during playback which caused buffering), its a clean interface, and works well.

For Kodi usage, I connect my laptop to my tv via HDMI.

Shield can eliminate what I'm doing with both devices, but it works good for me for now. So I'm happy.
