viperguy:
Does the above answer mean that the hdmi source will re-handshake with the TV and for instance change from bitstream DD-THD to 2-channel pcm when the receiver is set to stby?  Or do you have to turn the source off, after putting the receiver to stby, so that it can re-handshake with the TV?

i use a ps3 and an htpc running mediaportal, the ps3 will handshake and work, but the htpc wont as the audio format is a bit more firmly chosen in the setup (my x-series sony tv says unsupported audio format)

Sorry, I asked two questions in one there.  As I understand your answer the PS3 doesn't require a reboot to handshake, it just does it when the denon is put in stby. and it handshakes with the TV.  My HTPC just runs in two channel pcm, I haven't figured out how to get 5.1 out of it.

I misread this as "My HTPC just runs in two channel porn" and thought "wow, he must have an amazingly tolerant wife if his HTPC constantly streams two channels of porn"

Doesn't everyones?  I'd be interested to know how you then interpretted the 5.1

Maybe I need to change the font.....

Well thanks for all your inputs about the Denons I asked about.
In the end money talked and I bought a Onkyo TX-SR606 on special at JBHF.  It has good sound and all the hdmi functions I was after including hdmi pass through in standby.  The only things missing are the quick select buttons (but my Harmony 1000 takes care of that) and the ability to rename sources.  Only upscaling to 1080i doesn't matter because all my sources are hdmi.
As far as the 1909 vs 789 question that I originally posed goes, with negotiation the difference was $100-150 and I had resolved to spend the extra for the 2309 and get an extra hdmi and a little more power.
Maybe next time.
However I figure I saved a few hundred which I will use for my next purchase.......

Call it case closed from my point of view.

Yes quite warm.  Not quite as hot as MySkyHDi if you have one of those.  I certainly won't be putting it in an enclosed cabinet (well not without some forced ventilation anyhow).

But to be honest I've never stuck my hand on top of my AX4 after its been running for a couple of hours.
