My local cinema seems to just use video projectors, and you can see the pixels on the screen the resolution is so poor. Some of the art house cinemas around however are still good, and I like the embassy too which peter jackson uses for his premiers, which is classy.

+1 Lighthouse is great and its real close to me.

Our picks for cinemas are Lighthouse, Queensgate and then Readings Porirua. Readings is a poor third as their cinemas are getting a bit dated.

Whats gets me is its all relative to where you live. I tell my brother in the UK that we pay $16 for a movie and then he says they pay the same in pounds.

Even better was when I visited South Africa it was R15 (NZ$3) on their cheap Tuesday! LOL. Normal prices were around NZ$6.

I think the patronage also depends where you are. In Wellington the Cinemas are almost never full, sometimes I go and their are 5 or 6 people. But when I was in Masterton a year or two ago the whole cinema was packed. Seems like its the only option when in a smaller town!

PS Did you see TF3 made $80 million in a single day (according to wikipedia)

We go there from time to time, because the parents-in-law live at walking distance (through the roundabout to Paremata Rd) and Bella can stay with them ;)

Lighthouse Petone is a good one too. But they do charge well for the comfort.

I find the seats in the Lighthouse are still too close together. I have long legs and they feel cramped at the Lighthouse. But it is nice being able to take a glass of wine into the movie with you :-)

Queensgate is a good quality one, as it is relatively new, and it was built as a skycity one. I think cinemas in general do need to sharpen their prices if they don't want to go under. I would have thought it would have been better to have a cinema full, with people paying 1/2 price, and a cinema only 1/5 full paying full price.

Many thx Kopkiwi. Looks like another big $$ upgrade about to occur - I'm still running component video thoughout my system. The only HDMI product I have is the TV :-(

Hmm, wonder if the adpater will work with a HDMI->component converter ... however, just postponing the inevitable ..

Plus can buy popcorn and food from supermarket for dirt cheap. Leather recliner is more comfy and I don't have twats talking.

Sound wise. Will it's MORE than sufficient for a home theatre.

The only time I got to the movies is for BIG blockbuster movies.

What adapter are you speaking of? I thought no consumer projectors did 3D yet?

I am perplexed, where did you pay $18 for popcorn and a drink? I went to Event Cinemas and paid $8 for a medium PC and Drink.

I went to the Event Cinemas at Westcity, in Henderson. When the movie started, the sound was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop in there. I had to go ask the guy who does the tickets, if he can ask someone to turn the sound up. As far as soundproofing between cinemas goes, it is not 100% perfect becuase you can hear the bass from the cinemas next door, and the picture was all grainy, That I can understand is becuase have been watching films in digital the past few times I have been to the cinema. Why don't they just release films to cinema in 1080p Hi Def? The point in the past, was to give the patron the ultimate experience that you couldn't simply get on a TV at home. Television sets have supassed this, but the only thing is that the screens are not as big as a cinema screen, unless you get a projector. Which it still won't be as big. I want to know why don't cinemas upgrade their stuff, to show movies in a higher quality then the standard 35mm film most commonly used in cinemas today? Sure it will cost a bit of money, but they can sort that out by raising the ticket price, and raising the price for other things too. If the movie was in 1080p on a big screen, I wouldn't mind paying $30 or $35 from time to time, if the quality was better.

Answer to that is simple. The film they use is better quality then 1080p by a huge margin. The films you would have seen that were on a digital projector are 2k or maybe 4k not 1080 however even they come from 35mm film so are certainly no better and in reality are lower quality.
If the film had a lot of grain it would have been intentional by the people that created it not because it was on 35mm film.
