It's simultaneous dual band 802.11 a/b/g/n - I use the wired for my TV / PS3 / ATV2.
There are a couple of laptops, iPhones, iPad, iPod Touch and printer working off the wifi.
The modem I use is the stock Vodafone unit that came with the plan I'm on... I'm sure I could get performance by changing it... but... meh. Works fine.

There's loads of options out there, but to get it to work well with the ATV2 for DVD / music playback, I found the most support out there... is for the Airport Extreme.
Sorry.

Dunnersfella: Okay - so the audio freezing within the 1st second of playback issue is a known problem.
Fix = changing audio type to 'DVDPlayer'.

How do you do this?
Well, once you highlight the right song, hold down the menu button until another on-screen menu pops up, then scroll down to "Play using...". Choose DVDPlayer and everything should work.

BUT - you have to do this every time you want to play music.
The fix is here...

Just did this. Worked a treat. Thanks heaps.

Now. Is there a guide for instructions on how to arrange my music it reads as artist>album>track rather than just lumping it into one song list

Also. I can't connect through XBMC when my laptop is on wireless. But when I go through normal ATV interface and connect to iTunes, it's fine.

What gives?

I have my files arranged like this...

/XBMC/
/XBMC/Video/
/XBMC/TV Shows/
/XBMC/Music/

For music... let's say Pearl Jam 'Ten'... this is how it's arranged.

Then my XBMC/Music/Pearl Jam/Ten (then all the FLAC files)

Pretty straight forward I guess.

There are numerous ways to present the files. Just tab to the left to see the options (some will just show folders, some will show you media info (metadata like album art etc). It's particularly handy if you choose to put your movies and TV shows on there.

Right so spent 4 hours last night converting all my FLAC to WMA Lossless, then converting to ALAC in itunes.......I am up to.....F

Mother trucker this will take a while. Still got the whole NIN and Metallica back catalog to treck through as well.

Was wondering, playing through iTune, is there a way to keep it playing when my laptop is closed? Also will ATV2 pick up media files on the NAS and play them? Or do they HAVE to be played through iTunes?

Removing XBMC from the equation.

Get a copy of dbpoweramp it will do FLAC direct to ALAC.

I gotta say this sounds like a lot of hassle when a logitech squeezebox would have done native flac straight out of the box. I think even a Western Digital media player will do native FLAC for about the same price as the ATV2.

Squeezebox was a little out of my price range (anything more than $200 with the wedding around the corner and the boss will kill me)

I have a WD TV, but it's sluggish and slow and the interface is awful, when playing FLAC is cuts off the first 2 seconds of every song, annoying as all hell.

So for the hassle of converting everthing to have a smooth, fast and nice looking music listening experience, I don't mind too much.

Haha - welcome to my world!
I have an Apple Lossless library to run through iTunes... and a FLAC library to play on an ATV2, as well as on a future Mac Mini music server.
Fun and games ;-)
I can't run my particular laptop with the lid closed, that's why I'm sorting out a dedicated media server.

I assume the Mac Mini is the dedicated media server?

Was looking at that too, but it's still a bit pricey. Anything else on the cheap side that could be used as a dedicated media server? Doesn't need to be powerful or fast, just play me music :-)

Hey guys,

I've been pondering the WD TY Live, but there's a question I'm having trouble getting an answer to: Can WD TV stream from sites like TVNZ On Demand, TV OneDemand and Zlin TV ?

http://ondemand.tv3.co.nz/
http://tvnz.co.nz/video
http://www.ziln.co.nz/

and if WD TV can't, anyone know of a media player that can ?

just bought a Netcomm NP121 to get wired ethernet to the lounge AV cabinet :)

Yup - Mac Mini as a music server, and only a music server.
It'll be used solely by me I'm guessing, whereas the ATV2 is used by my partner - she loves just how easy it is to use / the interface. Whereas I want a music server to be as good as it possible can...
