richms:
The high prices here are partly to prop up the crazy insistance that people have of only financing things in interest free in NZ.
Yeah that annoys the snot out of me. Recently needed to buy a new dishwasher, HN had all the interest free rubbish on. I told the guy to give me his best cash price, $30 off ... the week before it had been on sale $250 less. Visited a few shops until I hit a Smith City guy that gave me slightly less than the upcoming sale price they had (they were in low interest mode that week) so he got my business.
They basically don't want to piss off their new owner by putting things on-line for too cheap.
It's easy to drop a price, but very hard to put it up again in order to show profit for their new owner...
Having said that, the 656 is now obsolete, so maybe they'll be happy to dump the remaining stock?
Dunnersfella:There's a Denon dealer in Christchurch?
denon is distributed by b+w loudspeakers nz, who trade as online hifi in tuam street.

Found another one...
MCONZ: So it definitely pays to go into a store to get a deal..
Contacted Avalon and was advised that if I come in store I would get a deal not to be offered online.
Went to have a look and tried not to get my hopes up, but after having a chat with the owner, I walked out with an Onkyo TX-NR 656 for $799, so I was pretty chuffed to say the least!
I picked up an Integra DTR-60.7 from them at the beginning of the year for $952. DTS-X and Dolby Atmos finally yaaay. A bargain and im very happy with it. I see that they got taken over by another company. I used to wonder sometimes as they would regularly "undercut" retail stores with their specials. Nice pair of Onkyo D77NE speakers in their "store" if you happen to visit.
Sony 77" A80J OLED, Integra 60.7, Panasonic UB820, Toshiba HD-XE1, Apple TV 4K, JBL L100T,JBL 18Ti, JBL L20T, Velodyne HGS15
MCONZ: It might be 'obsolete' as you say, but bang for buck its brilliant buying.
Just scanning this discussion and I'm, wondering why a 2016 receiver is obsolete.
What sort of changes has superseded it?

HDR is a big one that 2016 ones messed up. Still not certain it is sorted out.
Limited HDMI inputs supporting various things. Back 18 months ago you might have found fewer than all of them needing to be 4k, now only my switch is the only non 4k thing I have plugged in. Some had a few that didnt do hdcp2.2 on them or whatever.
I see Avalon are having a relocation sale, up to 50% off.

HDR is a video technology, why would it matter to a Audio receiver. The TX-NR656 supports HDMI2.0 so it should pass thru any 4K signal etc (with HDR etc).
It also has 8 HDMI input ports and it supports HDCP2.2.

OK I just read that HDR processes via HDMI 2.0a, and this receiver looks like it has HDMI 2.0a (https://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.php?m=TX-NR656&class=Receiver])
