Can you test the optical out at all? i'm wondering if its a straight passthrough AC3, or if it will process the AAC where ac3 isnt available and still give sound over optical.

the media port is the USB? Can you let us know what you can put in theer, I assume pictures, but would be interested to know what type of video it will accept.

Unfortunately testing the surround from the optical will require me to change my setup a bit and add another remote into the mix (waf "wife approval facter" nil ;-). I may have a go later in the weekend but I have most things running through the computer so do not see any benefit from adding the reciever back into the mix.

There is a DM PORT (Digital Media Port) and also a USB port on the side.

DM Port can be used to play audio from portable audio players with the correct adapter.

USB Port can be used to connect (sony) digital cameras, camcorders, usb storage (fat32 format) to display pictures.

Yes - at least the Sony which is the first to be Freeview certified. MHEG5 is a requirement of the Freeview certification.

Hey sbiddle, got two people here who have bought the new Sonys. I asked one of them about the EPG, apparently it's only now/next, not the full mheg5 based epg - this is only on the Austrlian models his manual says...

Certainly is. My understanding was that Freeview would not certify a device as being "Freeview|HD" capable unless it could display the full EPG and that the Sony was going to support this.

I wonder how long it will be until Freeview change their mind and transmit a full 7 day EPG using the EIT tables? I really can't understand why they won't do this and maybe somebody like Steve from Openmedia might be able to let us know why are so strongly against doing this?

If companies like Sony aren't going to impliment this then I can see many TV's with H.264/AAC support and no MHEG5 which in the end will hopefully result in them changing their mind..

I have 40" (hehe childish mine is bigger than yours joke there :-)

There are two modes for the EPG on the Sony's.

One channel at a time, with the shows down the screen. You just scroll through the days & channels with up/down & left/right keys.

Multiple channel at a time, with shows across the screen.

Manual mentions pre-booking stuff and setting up favs but I haven't bothered tring this out yet, still trying to tune the screen/colours so I am 100% happy. I am happy now, but not 100% more time needed to double check.

I have noticed after having 3 Philips Full HD TV's and the Sony, The Sony doesn't seem to handle SD content as well as the Philips. But in saying that, some of the HD content also looks a bit odd, Rove was perfect on Friday but NCIS looked a little grainy or fuzzy (not weather related).

The built in Freeview tuner was working better than my Nova-T 500 on Sunday with the weather having at affact on that.

The blacks are fantastic though. Very black.

What button do you hit to get that? And do you know how it is set up?

The guy I know that is having problems set his up himself (yeah I know USER ERROR) - he presses the "Guide" button and it says feature not available - and the manual says that it doesn't work if outside Australia.

Press the guide button and it will bring up the guide (multiple hours) for the channel you are watching, if the TV has only just switched on it may say loading.... but this normally only takes 10 seconds if that. The guide will only work when watching Digital TV, not analogue or other inputs, hdmi/av/cvi sockets etc. I am running this in NZ with KDL40W4000.

edit: No setup, TV scanned for Analogure then digital services on first start, askes a few questions and then defaults to digital tv with a working guide all by itself.

Freeview have stated that the EIT based EPG uses too much bandwidth compared with their MHEG-5 version. For DTT they want to retain as much capacity as possible for the broadcasters so decided to go for MHEG-5 only.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
