Yep, that's exactly what it does. Can't use Youtube or the internet, but the dongle connects to my wireless router and lets me stream the video from my desktop machine over the network (wirelessly).

Okay, I had a look at this and it could be useful. I have a few (probably n00b) questions before I run out and buy one:

- how would it connect to my Samsung TV? HDMI cable, or...?
- how would it connect to my network? Would I need to buy a wireless dongle for it?
- how does it read the files? Does it just stream over the network wirelessly like the Samsung Share Manager software does?
- as my files would be stored on my desktop, could I get buy getting a hard drive-less model?
- you mentioned about updating the device, is that like the Samsung Share Manager requiring updating every time a new file is added to the library?
- the remote looks nice, do the fast foward/rewind functions work okay over wireless?
- do they work with XP Pro?

Sorry if these are silly questions, but I haven't seen one of these before and they look interesting.

Sorry, been CRAZY busy over the last week.

1. Yep, connect via HDMI is best. It does come with component cable if you don't have a spare HDMI though.

2. I have two of these. One is in the bedroom and uses a wireless usb dongle (see my earlier post for the exact one I use, which costs about $45). The new one I bought is for the main lounge tv. I'd already run an ethernet cable from the back of the modem/router down through the floor and then back up behind the tv and has it connected directly to the tv and was using the Samsung system (PC Share Manager). But now the ethernet cable just does into the WD TV Live unit.

3. Yes. Wireless, or wired. Just like the Samsung system.

4. Yes, you'd do the same as me.

5. That's right. As the WD TV Live just sees your folders, there is no 'Refresh' or 'Update' (or whatever it's called) to bring things up to date. Much easier.

6. Yes. Rewind is a little variable and seems to depend on the file quality, but overall rewind and fast-forward seem to work much better than they do using the Samsung system (Pc Share Manager and Samsung remote). I just got sick of trying to rewind to watch a scene again and finding it not able to do it (often it would go back to the start of the file and starty playing). As a I say, I use a Logitech Harmony universal remote, which I would recommend. So I've put all the WD TV Live remote functions onto the Harmony.

7. Yes. I had XP Home until recently and it worked fine. Just upgraded to W7 and it works well too (although it took a bit of mucking about to set up sharing folders properly). XP is much simplier in that regard. But anyway, a quick google says that XP Pro is fine.

I just reinstalled my machine last night. I ended up buying one of these not long after this thread:

I didn't want to share all the shared files with the WD for viewing on the TV (text folders, for example) so I installed TVersity and set it up as a media server. This has worked quite happily until after I reinstalled Windows XP.

Now on the Western Digital, when I want to to open a video file on the main menu I open Files > Select Content Source (if required) > Media Server > my network drive > (as I did previously) and then it would show the folders I had added into TVersity.

Now, all I get is "Audio", "Photos" and "Video" - which I don't want. None of the folders I add appear. Those three folders were listed by default when I installed TVersity but I removed them immediately. However they're still there, and I can't figure out how to get rid of them to only display the folders I want.

I have removed/readded the desired folders, restarted sharing, rebooted numerous times...all to no avail. It stubbornly refuses to see my folders.

Anyone able to help? I'm tearing out what's left of my hair here...

Final update...many months later :)
I found the folders I wanted under "Video" so that's all sorted :)

Sadly my Samsung remote died tonight :( any idea how much a replacement might be?
