no not for the power output but for the even spread of bass. the very long wavelength of low frequencies can create bass holes and if you turn it up the hole dont fill you get bass booms instead

Good "fix" for this is put the sub in the main seat and then crawl around on the floor where you plan on putting the sub. if you can hear it will this way around should be good when you put it in th place you found as the sweet spot.

In terms of running cables in wall there was already power for a projector on the ceiling, just needs to be relocated. There will be speaker wires an hdmi cable and possibly serial cable for control of the projector. We're pretty sure we can access the wiring through the floor of the room on the second floor. Front speaker wires are likely to be run under the carpet.
The bluray player, freeview pvr and receiver are going to be out of sight in a vented cabinet to the far left and most likely behind the seating. This should help keep the room tidier and also works well with the wifi based remote. Will draw a pic of the room layout when I get a chance.
Still open to suggestions for the bluray player and freeview pvr keeping in mind the ps3 option costs only $700.

The great thing about the irule app is it allows you to have different panels on the ipod touch ones which can be simple and others which contain the buttons required for more complex operations.
The buttons can be made to look/mapped like a standard button. If they don't like the buttons they can all be customised to suit.

Music is not what this system will be used for.
Also with acoustic treatments, it is a good idea and ideally should be done, but the room in that respect will be staying how it is.
One sub will be plenty for them I'm pretty certain.

I'm ordering the gateway for the remote and buying the app to use on my iphone and will test it on my own home theatre as I was planning on getting it myself anyway. If I'm happy with its functions my parents can buy the stuff from me or get their own if I decide I want to keep it.

I'd go for the PS3 option from a non gaming point of view, it works very well as a media/Blu-Ray device but that's just me.

If your parents amp is doing the HD decoding for them, grab something like a Panasonic BD-65.
It's affordable, it's quick booting and can be multi-regioned for free by a service centre.
You'd be paying around $315 for it on sale.
The Sony BDPS570 would also be a great option as it has Wifi built in, and there's a iPhone / iTouch app you can download for it.

As a side note, I'd make sure whatever BluRay player you buy, is easy to connect to the net for your folks. That way you can set 'auto update' onto 'on' for them, so they never have to worry about keeping on top of firmware updates etc.

The Sony BD player mentioned is good, and the PS3 does the auto updates for Blu-Ray firmware etc very well. There is an option on the PS3 to switch the BD live to always on, doing this will automatically update all the latest firmware for the lastest Blu-Ray discs when playing them. And even when the user is watching BDs, it will run the updates as a backround task.

The PS3 has some very usefull features, however if you and your parents don't mind the overall look of the PS3 (which isn't that bad really?), then for the price and what you are getting out of it, what the heck are you waiting for?!

Go get one :)

JBHifi have the homecast dual tuner PVR with 8 day epg for $499 at the moment - much better option than using the PS3 - although I think you mentioned they'l get My Sky - if so a mute point.

If going for one subwoofer - make sure its one that can go deep and loud to get the full full LFE effects - dont want a huge screen and diminished audio....

Have got a few receivers in mind now:
yamaha rx-v3900 for $3000
pioneer sc-lx72 for $2750 with pioneer bdp-120
pioneer sc-lx82 for $3450 with pioneer bdp-120 (thinking this option)

The PS3 looks like it's getting ditched for a standalone bluray player and mysky hd.
If anyone wants to game on the big screen they'll have to drag my ps3 out of my room.

Am trying to sway my dad towards a set of wharfedale evo 2 speakers:
floorstanding evo 2 40 for $2000
bookshelf evo 2 10 for $1100
centre evo 2 for $680

Have also put more thought into the install and is going to be kept very simple, as I've figured a way to run the cabling around the top of the curtain rail to the projector (instead of up the wall and through the ceiling). The speaker wires are going to be run under the carpet. Also rear speakers have got approval for being on a stand or possibly mounted on a bracket on the roof, so in ceiling speakers are no longer required.
Centre speaker will likely be directly below the screen as it is not far off listening height.

I marked the edges of the screen position and size of 110" diagonally (2:35) on the wall to show my dad, and despite his first thoughts for a smaller screen, he thinks its fine.

The Evo 2 40 is very bassy. I thought about getting Evo 2 bookshelf as the rears but then thought again about my room setup, endup buying a set of Evo 40 floorstand as rears.
