Totally agree :)

Think the usual rate is around 15-16, but the couches are comfy. They have larger spaced couches than Lighthouse Pauhatanui

And with the grabone special, tickets were $8 a few weeks ago, so with the savings I got a gourmet pie, couple of coffees, chocolate and a beer :)

If, and it is a big if, I wanted the cinema business to have a half a chance of success this is what I would do:

Leverage the main thing they have going for themselves; the social experience of watching a film with other people.

Sure concerts are good because you see the band you want to see but a lot of the enjoyment is watching the band with a crowd, same idea.

I would bring back intermission and get film makers to take intermission into account when making a film. Then I would encourage people to talk about the first half of the film and buy another drink / snack. There would also be an ordering system from your seat so your drink / snack could be brought to you.

The opening weekend (possibly a bit longer) would have theme screenings such as you get when a new Star Wars opens. But these would be bigger and more lavish with waiters and live entertainment before and after the film. People would be expected to dress up in costume.

There would be meal and drink tie-ins with restaurants or bars near by with a roped off area for film watchers to buy drinks and snacks before or after the film and talk about it. Want into the 'exclusive' section? Join the club and come to the next showing.

Guess what? There would be singles nights and couples nights and kids/family days and links to babysitters and all the hassle and mucking around would be done for you. Sure, you would pay but you would get a premium service.

The film would always be shown in perfect focus with perfect audio. This goes without saying.

Tickets for these events would start at $30, probably go up to twice that. But the whole idea is that you are not competing with watching the movie at home on your HT system you are competing with live rugby or going to the pub or concerts or other forms of live entertainment.

And sadly, this will never happen.

The studios are making out just fine with DVDs, Blu-Ray and downloads. They may complain about the pirates but they don't care. Studios don't have any reason for cinema to survive, the things have been in decline for 20 years and the studios have done nothing.

Not to mention that the industry that just love sequels would probably not do something as high risk as this.

The Wanaka cinema is fantastic, not because of the films but because of the building and the sense of community gained from watching films there.

Oh, well, what a wonderful world it could be.

The only problem with that idea...
I don't want to watch a film with anyone other than my friends / or partner.
People hack, cough, talk, txt, scream out 'Jenny, Jenny over here!' etc.
I hates 'em!

There would be an 'ejector seat' system based on audience vote.

In all seriousness, in that case this isn't targeting you. It is better for you to watch a film at home with family and friends, I am not saying that to be mean, but it is the truth.

I don't go to a lot of Courtney Place bars. I don't like shouting at my partner over the music and paying $10 for a drink, standing up jammed in like a sardine.

On the other hand plenty of people do seem to enjoy this.

My idea was to give cinema a chance, any chance, as presently it is dying.
