Well I rented a movie from the MS App on my tablet, but was fairly annoyed the built in app doesn't support casting to my Android TV, nor my Google Chromecast (Yes I get that they are competing brands sort of). It seems short sighted for MS to not support this, given how widely it's deployed.

I thought you were going to use your xbox one? Have you tried it on that? Or is it not usually hooked up?

You're still able to watch the movie again with 48 hours (or 14 days if you haven't watched it)...

Yeah, well the X1 is in my living room, and I wanted to watch it on my TV in the Bedroom, so I thought, no problem, I have a cast capable 2016 TV, but NO, Apparently I can watch it on my Windows Tablet, I can watch it on my PC downstairs, or my X1, but I can't watch it on my Android TV. :(

Ah okay, I see your problem... But it's not something you can blame MS for tho surely... Google have their own movie/music store, so maybe they're protecting their patch? No hard evidence, just my thoughts. But anyhow, that's another entirely different topic altogether.

How did you find the experience otherwise? From choosing something and to actually watching it? Any other issues apart from not being able to watch it on your preferred screen?

I was actually surprised. There is an OK selection (Far from amazing, but I wonder if it's the way they choose to promote specific categories and movies), purchase was straight forward. I did have an issue where it wouldn't START the movie from any device until I restarted the device I purchased from. I found that quite strange. I want to see another movie so I am going to try again and see if the issue persists. Quality of the picture was ok, sound was ok.

Yea I was surprised by how easy and painless the whole process was.

That is a weird issue tho, I've not had that. But then again I only use the one device (xbox) to purchase and watch.. No restart need at all.

Only thing i can think of is maybe your devices are set to different regions? With my xbox I have it set to UK so i that i can use the TV adapter, if i want to watch a movie the xbox whines and complains that it's not in a region that matches my profile so i have to change it back to NZ...

If all these online services are offering limited choice and/or limited video|audio quality, those who want choice and quality will go to piracy where they can download anything from a crappy version with stereo sound, right up to a bitwise (but unencrypted) copy of the Bluray ISO.

Interesting you say 'serious watchers'.. now i might be looking too much into this, but what gives the serious watcher the right to torrent (i.e. illegal streaming) over others? What did these 'serious watchers' do before the internet age? Either go to the movies, video store or wait to free to air...

In my personal opinion, the services offered by SVOD providers at present is very reasonable. The general rule is, you want something (i.e. a good or service) you pay for it.

The argument around online services offering limited choice (and therefore ppl won't sign up and keep torrenting) doesn't make sense to me and is just an excuse for legitimising their behaviour. There is never going to be one service provider that will have everything a consumer wants. That's called a monopoly. We all know how great monopolies are right....? There has to be niche content that a content provider offers to get the punters in. It offers competition, which arguably keeps prices down.

At the end of the day, ppl just love to get something for nothing, which has been made a lot easier thanks to the internet...

I didn't say I endorsed piracy, I said I can understand why people do it if they want top quality and a choice greater than any one legit online provider can offer.

EDIT: to add, torrenters/newsgroupers don't necessarily do it because of cost, see above. Many would gladly pay to get top quality streaming or downloads.

The list is long brother.

One thing about your post I really liked. You want it to be legal, that's very good. And you don't like to pay ridiculously, that's even better and clever.

I found this interesting.

We were promised a golden age of accessibility, that the digital world we’re moving into would mean that we could watch in the same way as Apple music and services like that, we can listen to anything that’s basically ever been recorded and we should be able to do the same thing with film – that’s not the case.

My requirement to video rentals is:

1) Video quality: BD and if the movie was released in 3D - then 3D BD.

2) Audio - 7.1

If streaming - has to be high quality over ADSL (LAN) without dropouts or quality reductions

I can see HD streamed from overseas (e.g. from USA) from official TV channel sites - but there are annoying brief dropouts in sound and it is stereo.

Does any of the streaming services suggested here which do not have geo-restrictions support those specs above? What is the price for the New Release 3D BD movie with 7.1 Audio?

3) Price-wise before video ezy closed - I got New Releases for $6-8 and others for $1 or $2 on every week specials

Vudo, Itunes and some of the other providers have a rental option. iTunes I know you can download, and then watch - ie not stream it. So while it may take longer to come down at least there will be no buffering.

Some of them may provide 7.1 audio as well (ie iTunes with an Apple TV4)...but at $300 that's a fair few bought BluRays

As the post before yours makes clear, it is not only about the latest and greatest in technical quality. Choice (our lack of) also means art films and other brain food, not just BD CGI blockbusters. There are many criteria for determining what constitutes quality in a film, and most are absent from the choices available to us here.

I just feel it would be in the interest of everyone concerned if there was a (legal) android app that allowed the playing of iTunes movies on Android Devices. Surely most companies want more sales. I advocate for the same in reverse. It annoys me I can buy a movie on iTunes, but can't play it via my FireTV seamlessly.

Right, but like with everything, choice is nice. I can use google play, but sometimes each of the vendors will have a good special, like iTunes the other day had a BUNCH of movies for $3 google play had them for $8
