I like it when forums work. It is so much easier to get a good deal when you are well informed.

I wonder if HN have to (or feel obliged to) match the invoice given that it is one of theirs?

Generally most stores in my experience will only go so low no matter how much you twist their arm but as soon as someone else does it lower they'll match it, in order to keep the sale.
If it's from the same retailer or not it probably won't matter much...

Well after looking at the LG 50PS80FD which really had some superb features for the money (Dual Freeview tuners)/ Record to USB drive/ inbuilt Divx (and other formats) codec and a really smart looking set), I decided on the TH-P50G10Z. The main reason? The review of the LG on CNET said that the blacks tended to be a bit brown. Well I tracked one down at JB and the colours looked quite different to the other TVs. Probably not fair that it was surrounded by LCDs. Anyway, the very helpful sales guy fiddled with the settings for quite a while - but the blacks still looked marmite brown. CNET did rate it quite highly and mentioned that the brownish effect wasnt so noticeable in a dark roo... but it was enough to put me off I'm afraid - So I bought a 50" G10.

Anyway - Out of the box the colour settings look a bit drab - I may buy a copy of the Video Essentials disc to calibrate the TV with - but just out of interest what settings do people use?

Those settings use the THX mode which we don't get but they're probably not far off.
From memory, set mode to cinema, colour temp to warm, brightness was -5 and contrast 60ish but these will depend on your room and how bright/dark it is. sharpness 0, everything else off.

You will need DVE or similar to get those settings exact but in the meantime a good way to make it look better is to set up your room so there are no lights shining on the front of the tv.
If you're serious about the best possible picture and don't mind no tv for a week you should break it in, takes about 120 hours on the 12th gen panasonics

either download the dvd or hook your pc up to your tv and play the slideshow of thumbdrive files.

That would ensure you get the best result when you do come to calibrate it.

Hey y'all. Fyi the Panasonic V 50" has arrived at Harvey Norman. Looks beautiful. They are not promoting a special price or anything yet however; the price tag is 4699. JB Hi Fi aren't sure they're going to get it, and if other appliance stores are the same then that doesn't bode well for a great cash deal. But hey, that G got down to 2980 so who knows?!!!

I've had my G 50" for just over a week now, and am very pleased with it.
I don't expect to be upgrading that for several years now.
My av amp will be the next item to be upgraded (as it is pre HDMI) - but that is probably a while away too. I still enjoy great sound from plain old Dolby Digital / AC3 / DTS with a 7.1 speaker setup.
