Hi everyone, I have been lurking since 2011 but taking up my activity on Geekzone now.

I am a 43 year old norwegian man with a kiwi wife. Currently living in Norway but moving to New Zealand in the end of august this year.

I have worked in various tech fields, having been a sound engineer and radio jock for 10 years, and working with web development since 1995.

The last 11 years I have been working with safety equipment (smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, alarm systems etc). My main focus areas were marketing and product development as well as being responsible for IT systems, web sites and ecommerce. The two safety companies I co-founded had a revenue of 6 million NZD last year.

Since 2011 I have been more or less fulltime freelancer developing WordPress sites for big and small clients. I have more than 50 WordPress sites that I take update and protect against hacking etc.

I am interested in tech in general, internet technology and services, and I am a gadget lover.

Mostly use Apple products for my own needs, but have been working with MS products and services for work since before I care to remember and its still at part of my day to day life.

Hobbies? When do I ever have time for that.. When I do have time photography is a big passion. And I am also a big movie lover and fond of good music and good Hi-fi systems. (Although, being a sound engineer I might not be the person to talk with about the superior sound quality of gold digital cables ;)

Great to read more about you Jarle. You are coming to NZ in the coldest month, but compared to Norway, it is nothing! I hope it all goes well, and expect you will have no difficulty in finding work once you get here. In a previous life, I was also a Broadcast Engineer, working at Radio Studios, then at various Transmission Sites around the North Island. Also dabbled in Sound Engineering as a hobby.

Hi Grant, nice to meet a fellow former broadcast engineer. I have not worked in radio since 1996 but am still as interested as the day I quit (well, I was pretty fed up by the radio business when I quit, so probably more interested again now).

Having worked with well formatted radio stations I must say there are quite a lot of music from the 80s and 90s that I just can't listen to again. And the two biggest commercial radiostations here in Norway seem hellbent on playing all the same hits from the 80s and 90s every single day. Thank god for BBC 6 Music, unformatted radio has been a blessing.

Moving to Napier from Norway, will get there in the late winter/early spring if I am not mistaken?

I am used to temperatures getting well below -25 degrees celsius, so the winter weather in NZ should be fine, but I have experienced your general lack of insulation of your houses. Seems like people build houses in NZ without thinking about windy and cold winter nights..

I would say more late winter than early spring. Generally, spring makes itself felt by the middle of September, but
there are usually some severe cold snaps until things settle down around the end of October.

We live in an old farm cottage which is poorly insulated and also has wooden joinery that doesn't seal very well. I have put under-floor insulation in the most important parts, and it has ceiling insulation, but without spending major $ on wall insulation, it still isn't great. Fortunately, we live on a 54 hectare lifestyle block with unlimited firewood, and a wood burner like you have in Norway. It means a few more hours each year with my Stihl chainsaw cutting up firewood, but we both love having a fire going. It's one of the pleasures of winter, along with hot chocolate and soup for lunch. Up here we only get 2 or 3 frosts during winter, and sometimes none at all, so I can't complain really.

Ah fellow broadcast engineer geeks is not bad company to keep.

Jarlsberg is not that hard to find, apparently it shows up here and there in NZ. Its a highly subsidised cheese that (the export of Jarlsberg is subsidised).

Herring? Thats swedish. Calling something swedish norwegian is akin to saying something ozzie is kiwi ;)

A norwegian speciality is Klippfisk another is brunost

We used to have really good chocolate, now we just have fairly good chocolate (Thanks to Kraft food buying the biggest norwegian chocolate producer)

We love our dairy products here, we have insane amounts of dairy based spreads.

Looking forward to the high supply of (to me) cheap lamb meat when I come to NZ. Lamb is produced in Norway as well, but we seem to think that the animals should fend for themeselves and they tend to die instead of becoming food.

Been in NZ in april and december/january - so will be a new experience to see the last part of the New Zealand winter.

After you are done with the walls, next comes doors and windows. Having good insulation all around and neglecting the windows and doors don't work well here. And I have experience the huge difference double insulated windows and doors can make. Having upgraded 25+ year old windows and doors in a house.

Fortunately, we live on a 54 hectare lifestyle block with unlimited firewood, and a wood burner like you have in Norway. It means a few more hours each year with my Stihl chainsaw cutting up firewood, but we both love having a fire going. It's one of the pleasures of winter, along with hot chocolate and soup for lunch. Up here we only get 2 or 3 frosts during winter, and sometimes none at all, so I can't complain really.

Sounds cosy. We like good wood burners. My grandparents had a wood burner that was used for cooking.

Here in Norway the winters give us lots of snow. That can be a hazzle sometimes when they can't get rid of it fast enough on the streets. But the worst driving conditions is when we get chilled rain that turns into ice as it hits the road. And it also collects on your windscreen.

Oh and we have something I know is foreign to most kiwis: We change to winter tires on our cars in winter. So have the pleasure of changing tires twice a year. Been a slow spring so far, but looks like its time to change to summer tires on the car now.
