Hi everyone,

Nice to see a dedicated site for NZ users. I've had my N95 for 4 days now and I love it. I have debranded and upgraded to v20 firmware with no problems. I'm looking forward to reading more about GPS and how to get the best for little or no cost.

I'm a phone junkie, N80 before this one and N70 before that.

I'm off to read some posts now. Hungry for info.

Welcome and congrats on your N95! Glad to see that you've debranded and got yourself to the V20 firmware, well worth it!

Theres plenty of good posts here - and make sure to check my blog - I'm currently posting a three part series on N95 GPS in New Zealand.

Cool. I'm keen to find out which apps are best for GPS. I've got the latest stuff from Nokia maps loader for NZ but I've been reading a lot about people who have made their own maps etc.
So much info it hurts.
Any suggestions?

Well, Nokia maps is hopeless here, but if you go overseas then its well worth it (unless you're travelling to another country like NZ with poor maps coverage, like India).

Google Maps have a Symbian version of that app - its good - better than Java Google Maps by a mile BUT there are data charges (no way to store maps), and its functionality is relatively limited (good for directions but thats about it). MGMaps is a Java non-official version of Google maps, it has much more function, and you can install stored maps (bit of a rigmarole to get it going though). Garmin Mobile XT costs at least $79 US, but its the best option here - NZ Open maps work on it (they're free, and being able to store them means there are no data charges beyond A-GPS associated ones if you leave A-GPS enabled) and are excellent - good street level detail and full voice-guided routing. Its a bit of a rigmarole getting Garmin XT going too.

I'll be talking about everything BUT Garmin in my next post to my blog, with some detailed instructions for how to use stored maps in MGMaps, my third post will give details on Garmin and a detailed "how to" there also.

Wow,
I've managed to get Garmin XT working on my N95 with the NZ open free maps.
The only problem I have is when I try to search for an address it asks me which state and I can't find anything.
Have you had this problem?

Hey man, did you order online or download the application (Garmin XT)?  Thanks.

Followed the instructions on

I've just driven back to Auckland from Matakana and used it. Great.
I'll be getting the CD Rom I think.
