Sorry been on the forum but haven't said "hi" so, hello.

I'm based in Wellington via the UK and a few other countries...I'm what they call a Global Nomad, or TKC.
I'm happy to help with any UPS problems, querys anyone may have.

What else? I'm a big Mac fan (comes from working in education..and in China, never had a day without a couple of Windows machines crashing there)...although I will use a Windows machine if forced to.

I love computers (and electronics), and having a play with them. Which normally leads me to buying things most people wouldn't consider (such as a Nokia N800).

I'm a bit of a car geek as well. I've spent many a happy hour helping prep rally cars, or wiring sound systems. My favorate car (and most problematic) was a MK1 Mini.

Welcome APC UPS Geek,

Perhaps you can explain why no-one in NZ seems to stock replacement batteries for APC UPS's.

I'm trying to get hold of an RBC7 for my Smart-UPS 1500. Pleanty of places will sell me a NEW UPS, and have it deliverd in 24 hours, but no-one can sell me a new battery or even give an indication of how long it will take to get one.

Frustration (and the battery alarm) is beginning to annoy.

Maybe like most 3rd party suppliers they make their own replacements as shown here.

18Ah 12v batteries are available.

TechPac used to sell APC replacement batteries, although the kits were always quite pricey - to the point where a new UPS was often about the same price.

However, MH Power Systems in Albany in Auckland used to do replacement batteries for quite cheap - ISTR replacing the batteries in several 1.5kVA units for about $50 each.

Hello thanks for all the welcomes.
Batteries, I've had dealings with ITpower ( http://www.itpower.co.nz ) here. Always with a positive result. So you could try them.
They arn't cheap things, which is probably why a lot of people don't buy them...instead just opt for a new UPS with the warranty (I'm guessing if you battery has died then your UPS is probably run out of warranty).
You can try replacing the battery with as mentioned in the wikihow link...that said they do point out that it is really/strongly not reccomended by APC.
We had one of the tech guys do that, and he ended up having to buy a whole new UPS. More because he was being careless when he did it than anything else.

I must mention that anything I say here, I say not acting in any capacity as a representative of any company. Just my own personal recommendations, thoughts, and ideas. Always contact the manufacturer of the product mentioned in the post directly before carrying out any work on the device. Electricity can kill!

I'm another newbie around here too :-)

Just on the subject of batteries, can anyone recommend a good _cheap_ place for laptop batteries? I've got an old P3 laptop I was given for my daughter to use at school with a dead battery, but a replacement battery seems to be more than the laptop is worth.

Thanks for all the help guys. I picked up a replacement battery from IT Power today and now my UPS is up and running again as it should.

I also highly recommend IT Power as well. I've ordered batteries from them on many occasions and had brilliant service from them. Their pricing may be a little of the steep side but then again APC UPS's aren't cheap either! :-)
