DarthKermit: Welcome to GZ. And I hope you enjoy living in Napier. Smile

Thank you, I think I will. My wife is eager to move to Wellington so I am not sure if I will be allowed to stay much more than a year in Napier ;)

jarledb:

Herring? Thats swedish. Calling something swedish norwegian is akin to saying something ozzie is kiwi ;)

A norwegian speciality is Klippfisk another is brunost

Apologies for the Herring remark, I blame my sisters Swedish influences...
I have tried the dried cod in Svolovaer a few years ago, I'll politely call it a Norwegian delicacy!

The dried cod is actually found in another delicacy that you might have tried: Bacalao. There are strong food tradition ties between the west of Norway (Bergen tand that part of the country) and Portugal. It has been and still is a significant trade between the two countries in dried cod. :)

Solvær? I have ancestors from that part of the country. But I myself have never been farther north than Trondheim. Should take a trip up north soon, and catch the aurora borealis.

My keyboard does not come with those short cuts (well not easily) but yes it was Solvær. I'm heading to Longyearbyen in a couple of months time but I think it will be too light for the northern lights but hopefully the polar bears will be out (but not too hungry)

Have a fun at Svalbard! Remember to bring guns when you are out exploring. The polar bear actually got humans (and mostl anything else meaty) on their diet. They are not to be messed with.

Here is a recent news story

jarledb:I am used to temperatures getting well below -25 degrees celsius, so the winter weather in NZ should be fine, but I have experienced your general lack of insulation of your houses. Seems like people build houses in NZ without thinking about windy and cold winter nights..

Yes, my wife comes from a tropical country and really struggled the first few winters. We've brought an oldish house recently (original parts built in 1855) but it's been extensively renovated and has good underfloor and roof insulation as well as a wood burner so she's quite happy now :-)

Not to up on the food places as I don't get up that way as much as I'd like, but there's tons of sightseeing to be done. Get yourself up Te Mata peak fairly early on and take a tractor ride out to Cape Kidnappers to see the Gannet colony. Huge amount of wineries there too...

Welcome to Geekzone btw :-)

Welcome to GZ it's a great community we've got here run by some even greater admins... (well most of them...just kidding all are great).

Napier is a nice place to live. Was living there for about a year myself about 10 years back and travelled back there semi regularly after moving back to Wellington. As for places to eat I can't name any but for sightseeing definitely agree with the aforementioned Te Mata Peak, Wineries and the Gannet Colonies.

Not sure if you have kids (didn't see a mention of them (or if you did sorry for forgetting so quickly)) therre was (or possibly is) a good Christian (at least I think it was) Holiday Camp that you could send your children to in the holidays. Back when I was a wee lad we holidayed there for school (this is why it's a was / is I'm quite a few years out of school now) camp and it was great fun. Sorry I can't remember the name of the place.

What area of Napier were you looking at moving to??? We lived in Taradale directly behind the shopping area which was fantastic as being so close to the shopping hub was very handy. There is also a few good schools up there (for all ages from primary to tertiary) if you were in the need.

Good luck with your move and if you do end up in Wellington it really is a fantastic city to live in (of course though most people say that about their home towns but it truly is a great place to call home).

Maybe we'll see you when you move here or at some of the GZ events that are run from time to time.

:-)

Thank you, I have actually followed tweet2eatHB for a while. Its an interesting resource to discover new places to eat, but not exactly an independent source for how good the places actually are (from what I can gather).

They are the best ;)

Sounds like that has to be a part of the plan then, sightseeing at Te Mata Peak (there is a restaurant up there, I think?), and Wineries and Gannet Colonies it is then.

We are looking in Ahuriri, will be renting for the year we are there. Although the house market does look interesting. Have also looked around other places of Napier and in Hastings - but think we will end up in Ahuriri.

Good luck with your move and if you do end up in Wellington it really is a fantastic city to live in (of course though most people say that about their home towns but it truly is a great place to call home).

Wellington is a nice wee city. I have enjoyed it there when I have been there, and I am sure I will enjoy it when we move. For Wellington we are looking at Paraparaumu and Plimmerton.

Maybe we'll see you when you move here or at some of the GZ events that are run from time to time.

That would be fun.

I actually follow quite a few people that follow them so they seem to recommend most places but I don't think they're sponsored in any way. I lived in Hastings for awhile and would agree with most of their recommendations. :-)

They are very much a pay-to-play place: http://tweet2eat.co.nz/about-us/

Doesn't mean it can't be good restaurants that they feature or that it isn't a good resource. Its just that they are telling the restaurants story, not a journalistic story free from bias.
