Azzura: Mazzie,

It takes roughly 3.6m3 to equal a cord of wood. A cord of wood in Canada...well in NB is roughly $225. Cord of wood is 4ftx4ftx8ft. Maybe that helps you figure it out?

Heheh buying in bulk eh - shopping in NZ isn't like shopping or when you buy at Cosco or a Canadian grocery store (it's a little different here in NZ stores).

Good morning Azzura, Hmmm, I have never been much good trying to visualize stuff in shapes LOL. Now if you said that it would fill up a small pick-up truck or a large pick-up truck then that I could fathom hahaha. I always laugh when they measure everything here by 'football fields' what the heck does that look like! I always think of an English football field which I can relate to, but the American football field is nondescript for me.

I actually don't buy too many things at Costco, so that won't be too much of a loss to me. In fact I'll save $124.50 every year by not having to pay for my membership there LOL. I hate shopping anyways, whether it be grocery or anything other kind of shopping. Yes, you guys, I really don't like shopping.

I guess you will all be heading off to bed soon and looking forward to your upcoming weekend whereas, it is only 8.00am here on Thursday. I am off work this week, so have been able to spend time on here and doing research which has been nice.

Haha I never shopped at Cosco either.

I could suggest some things you might want to pack.

Underarm deodorant sticks....they don't seem to have a wide selection here (although it seems to be growing or maybe I have been looking in the wrong stores), but if you and hubby use the spray on or roll on stuff...you'll be fine.

If you drink coffee...they don't have creamer here. But they have this stuff by Anchor called Lite Cream (in Countdown, and it's not sold as coffee creamer)...works great...its not in the milk section (coolers). It on the shelf in the grocery store...somewhere (sorry can't remember the isle). But its there if you want creamer for coffee.

Kraft Dinner...none here (except some kinda microwave version). I don't eat it much ...once maybe every 3 months. There is an American Grocery Store in Auckland..maybe there is one in ChCh.

Cinnamon Gum....none here at all. Except in American Store in Auckland. Or whatever you pack in your suitcase.

If you enjoy butter popcorn at the movies....well you'll just have to enjoy it without butter

Do you have Avon in NZ? If so then that sorts our underarm deodorant problems. See what I mean about completely different questions from when this thread started? Now we are talking about personal hygiene, LOL!

Coffee, well I am still in the British coffee mode, always have been. We drink instant coffee out of a jar. Only drink drip coffee when we go to a restaurant for breakfast and that's because that's all they serve. Not worried about cream, but it's good to know if I do want it.

Kraft dinner........YUCK! Hubby likes it, but I think it's disgusting stuff. I never eat gum and I hate popcorn too. I have never gotten Americanized when it comes to food, that's one thing I really miss about the U.K., the food. I love back bacon in the U.K., but here all you get is streaky bacon and it's 98% fat and they have the cheek to call it bacon, so I don't eat the stuff.

I don't think I will miss any food from here at all, which can only be a good thing.

Car insurance must be better value here - for example our oldish car, Toyota Caldina 1998 140k kkms, agreed value $7500 is about $360pa for full cover including free glass cover (no excess).
I guess we can be thankful for ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) and that you can't sue for injury in New Zealand.

Most cars in New Zealand are used (or new) Japanese imports, with a low proportion of European cars. New Korean and Chinese cars becoming more common now too.

Just back to insurance for a minute...

If you haven't hand any vehicle (or house contents) claims it probably wouldn't hurt to see if you can get a note from your current insurers to that effect. It may, or may not, get you a slightly lower premium or excess when you sign up with someone down here. Just one of those odd things that may give you a benefit and is easier to do now than later.

As for Coffee and creamer.... pleeease. We have real coffee and real cows that happily product natural full-on flavoured full-fat cream, if you're not into normal flat-whites or lattes

Aha, now that's more like it $360/year sounds good to me. Our cars are a 1999 Ford Escort with about 140,000 KM and a 2000 Grand Caravan with 98,000 kms and if we were to sell them here, we would be lucky to get $1000 and $3000 respectively, so $3,000 a year 3rd party is completely retarded. Good to hear that you can't sue for injury.

Yeah, I have seen the cars for sale on Trade Me, they are as high to buy as it is to rent a house LOL.

I'm still coming though!

Actually I don't mind Latte Coffee, but I only have one cup a day anyways, otherwise I drink water. You're right about when in Rome, at least I don't have to learn how to speak English to live there LOL.

Well, I reckon you can't beat a nice cup of instant coffee made with whole milk, mmmm delicious, but I only buy skimmed milk so I never have it as it just doesn't taste the same with skimmed milk.

Bring some geniune Canadian maple syrup with you. In some supermarkets there is only maple 'flavoured' syrup. Makes a good gift for Kiwis too.

good thread by the way good to see others helping out. As an aside, I was in Christchurch on Friday, was taken through town a place I knew very well but had trouble figuring out where exactly I was with all the damage. Couldn't get to terms with the damage. Thumbs up to the Cantabs for what they have and are going through.

I hear that! A couple of weeks ago I was in the central red zone with work and we got quite lost. With the aid of some iconic structures we managed to get some perspective, but we did find ourselves looking at empty plots struggling to remember what was there. Once buildings like the Farmers Carpark and Westpac buildings come down it'll make it even harder.

Mazzie, I work on a rotating shift so I often lurk around here in the early hours when work is quiet :-)
