If the computers are in the same LAN you can create a share on your PC and on your Apple PC go back to desktop, click on "Go | Connect to server [Apple K]" and enter "smb://[ip address]/[share name]".
and to take it a step further .. if you don't have a USB HDD --- you could just get a 2.5" USB caddy, take out your PC HDD ( make sure you get the right one for the laptop HDD PATA or SATA caddy ) and bung it in there.. and then you've got a VERY cheap USB hdd.. pull the data directly from the source drive, just be careful not to delete it :)
Got it done - networked the two babies and transfered 20gbs over easy..... althought my PC laptop ran out of battery and I had to do it all over again! Anyway might consider buying a backup USB HD
