Sony has come out with new notebook PCs with HDMI input. 

Now, can someone tell me what this means?

Can you watch TV through your notebook?  Record TV?  Use your TV as your screen?  Does audio transfer to the TV too?

It just makes hooking your PC up to a TV or projector easier. It also allows playback of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs which have HDCP copy protection which cannot be played back using any other type of output. Does the laptop have a built in blu-ray drive at all or an option to fit one?

It doesn't allow watching or recording TV but yes audio should also be transferred from the laptop to the TV via the HDMI cable.

The Sony model I am looking at does not come with Blu-Ray drive.  This really makes HDMI redundant, right?

Not really. It allows you to hook it up to a monitor or projector without having to bother with video and audio cables and with some models of TV and projectors HDMI is a lot easier to set up than RGB.
