I have new laptop acer aspire 5920 with dvb-t tuner card, I have plugged in both ariel comes with laptop and house tv ariel, but when searching for channels none are found? software I am using is progDVB, detects card fine, just no channels are found, do I need digital ariel of some kind? anyone else having this issue with 5920 laptop getting tv tuner working??

In New Zealand, DVB-T is not in use for Digital Television. Only DVB-S (which requires a satellite dish).

You could sit there for a month, and still not see a channel!!

What city are you located in?

I am located in New Lynn Auckland, have tied it there and in CBD Auckland makes no difference. I guess I will have
to accept that it isnt going to work.

It won't work anywhere at present due to no DVB-T transmissions in NZ.

These are due to start in February or March next year however NZ will be using an MPEG4 based transmission system which differs from the MPEG2 based system that many other countries have used. Chances are you will be able to view TV on your laptop from then however will probably require newer software to do so.

ok, cheers for the info, I will leave it till early next year and try again,
one last question, when dvb-t does get released here
will I need special ariel or sat dish plugged into tv tuner card
or will normal ariel/UHF ariel pickup signal fine??

DVB-T = Digital Video Broadcast - Terrestrial
DVB-S = Digital Video Broadcast - Satellite

Terrestrial is ground based. Needs an aerial, wont work with sat dish.
Satellite is space based. Needs a sat dish, wont work with aerial.
