My beloved 2010-vintage Vaio laptop (model VPCZ126GG) has suddenly died, aged 5 years.
It cannot be replaced, and is too old for economic repair.

So I suddenly need a new Vaio equivalent, and seek your advice.

Requirements:

Traditional laptop format
Good build quality - I want it to last at least 5 years.
For general use - NOT gaming.

High-quality 13" or 14" screen - no larger
Lightweight
An i5 processor or higher
SSD drives(s)*
8GB RAM
USB3 port(s)
Optical drive optional
Win 8 or Win 10 OS
Budget: below $3,000

* I have a new 2.5" 1TB SSD that I could use to upgrade a small SSD, if required.

Advice please

Lenovo have great built quality. Asus are also good.

The small and light ones will not normally take a 2.5" drive, they are m2 sized drives in them so dont count on being able to chuck your existing SSD into it. Upside is no sata bottleneck on the SSD so they scream along :)

As an ex-vaio owner myself the only ones I see comparable are the Macbook Pro Retina or the new Dell XPS 13/15. You could also wait until more options for the skylake processor laptops become available as they come with better battery life etc. I currently have the 13inch macbook pro 2014 that I brought in the UK at the end of last year, 8GB DDR3, 512MB SSD, i5 2.8ghz, Intel Iris 5100 graphics. I also have Windows running on it so I can switch between OSX and Windows. The trackpad is amazing under OSX and have yet to find a Windows laptop equivalent. In saying that if Sony still sold laptops I would be heading straight for a Vaio but instead I'm going to be getting the new Dell XPS 15 once the configuration I want is available on the Dell NZ website.
